I wonder how many recent college graduates could pass this test? I remember learning some of this stuff in school, but most of it goes right over my head. I no longer feel so smart.

Actually, I think I would do rather well - except I have no clue what the history of Kansas is.

I used to be a legal admin. so grammar, syllables, etc. are a sinch. I am a history buff, so American history is good. I might have some trouble with the countries in Europe and their capitals. Can I use a calculator for the math?

I think that is one thing that you may have overlooked. As we have grown in knowledge, we have changed our understanding of how the world works - especially in science. As a matter of fact, we are still re-writing science books. So their understanding of the weather may be very different than our understanding with resources such as doppler radar. Even parts of history have been re-written so my answer to the accounts of Columbus' discovery of America might be a failing answer to the 1895 teacher. What does surprise me is that there were no questions on Latin. In 1895 everybody learned Latin in school.

I probably knew a lot of those anwers before I graduated, but now my mind is full if useless knowledge. Like how much money is in the bank, how much money do I need to make this week, what bills are due, etc......etc.....etc. Adult learning just isnt as fun as learning for knowledge

In 1895 the 8th grade was the last year of "compulsory" attendance in most states. 7-8th was called "Jr High", and "high" school was just that ... really college prep. Most of the students, mostly male, left after the 8th for agricultural/trade vocations. Orthography is spelling and punctuation.

In the math section some of the dollar amounts would be astronomical for 1895. i think this might be a newly conceived test that is poorly written to make you feel bad, i might be wrong but judging by who it's written and some of the figures used that is the gut feeling i get anyways.

Man! i just realized my previous post would have been a perfect place to use the word lambasted. You don't get the chance to use that word often and i missed it.
