The people who are telling you to get a lawyer are correct. This is serious. You have been cited. It's not about who is right or wrong. It's not about saving money. It's not about how you feel. It's about defending yourself and your career against that citation. Talking to the DA is also a good idea.

Either way, wake up, dude. You are in serious trouble.

A conviction for shoplifting will haunt you for the rest of your life. Employers in the future will not care about your explanation. They will care about the conviction. If you aspire to be something more than a truck wash bay supervisor, get a lawyer, one who knows the DA and the court in whatever county you were cited in.

True dat. This is serious. In all likelihood this kid isn't going to walk away from this unscathed. A conviction which will last a lifetime is imminent. A conviction of this magnitude usually carries jail time even though on a first offense it could be as little as 30 days. Having been involved with loss prevention in the past, My feeling is, assuming this kid is telling the truth about the facts of the matter, He will escape with a lite penalty. However, if he takes the same shoulder shrugging attitude he seems to be displaying here, a no nonsense judge could lock him up for 6 months. Having said this the facts as presented give me pause. I submit there is more to this story...

Attempted shoplifting? I never heard of "attempted" shoplifting. If the judge asks him to "show cause" why he did what he did and is flippant about it, he could easliy be convicted of shoplifting. I don't know in what state this happened or what the value of a machete is but if it exceeded a specific dollar amount it could be Grand Theft, though I doubt the value of a machete would constitute Grand Theft.

I'm with the DDs - this guy is slingin more than a blade around - but the biggest question in my mind is why, after being detained, questioned, accused of shoplifting and ticketed for it, did he go ahead and purchase items from that store?
If I were treated like that, I would not feel like adding to that particular store's profits...just sayin.

I didn't see this thread--- didn't see this thread--- didn't see this thread....

OK, I saw it, and am having major trouble believing the OP is somebody I'd want to have a machete. Something about this smells to high heaven.

To the OP: Everybody who suggests you should get a lawyer is right. You're going to have a heap of 'splainin' to do on this one, and it's a fair chance that you're not as swift as you think you are when you stand before the judge.

Oh, I think it's legit, happened exactly the way he said. "Young and stupid" can manifest itself in many ways. For example, he..put..a..machete.....in..his....pants. There ya go.

Well I guess it's a good thing it was in the sheath, otherwise he might be singing this song in soprano....yes? :p

I have a question. It's like this: Since November of '87, I've driven tractor-trailer, since '90 it's been various sizes of four-wheelers in a courier outfit until April of this year, from then in vans of one size or another in out-and-back expedited. I've never, in all that time, had a use for a machete. Can somebody explain to me how, exactly, a machete qualifies as "van stuff"? I do have one of those Swiss army knives in my toolbox, sometimes that little screwdriver is exactly what you need at that moment--- but a machete??? I can't recall even once being in a place where a machete would do me any good--- and I've been in a couple of places where such a thing would cause me more trouble than I need. Just try getting into a secure area with a machete on board your vehicle.
