How much has Expediting changed since you started?

The old days of Expediting was so much different almost 18 years ago for me. Expediters Online hadn't even started up. Roberts Express was the big Expedite carrier. If you had a 60 inch sleeper you was in heaven with a big sleeper. We all had pagers and QC pager for load offers. Cell phone still cost to much to have. Fuel was .89 a gallon and we would hang out at Denny's on 14 mile road in Detroit, Michigan. If you was at home in your home Express Center you was called a homebody and all layover truck would go ahead of you on the board.

There was no FSC for loads because Fuel was cheaper than it is today. These are just some of the things that was different when I started. Oh Lawrence still was a driver back then also.

Oh, so you want to talk about life before Qualcomm (C-Link)? At Roberts we had to call in on a pay phone (whats that?) every 4 hours. Neat trick traveling Chicago or NYC. Sleepers were a "coffin" on a Ford E350. (Unsafe at any speed).

Pay in a direction toward home was reduced to 46%. Motel allowances were $45, provided you landed at "approved L/O" by 10 am.

When we started with Roberts Express 16 years ago the standard (non-discounted) rate for a tractor was $1.69 a mile.

The people who drive the vans has changed a lot, but the rates are still the same as they were 20 years ago! It hasn't really changed all that much lol.
