Remember the Border Patrol agents now in prison for shooting the supposedly unarmed drug smuggler? Seems he has given an interview with his version of what happened. Interestingly enough, he says he was smuggling drugs in an effort to earn enough money to renew his CDL.
An article in the El Paso Times says
"Aldrete Davila graduated from high school and became a truck driver, taking maquiladora shipments to El Paso and back, he said.
He takes great offense at being referred to as a "drug smuggler," he said, because he only did it once.
"It was a moment of weakness, out of desperation," he said.
The story he told Department of Homeland Security investigators who came to look for him in Mexico in 2005 was that he needed to make quick money to renew his commercial driver's license, his livelihood."

Isn't it comforting to know how the Mexican drivers, who our government is so eagerly inviting to take our jobs, get their CDLs? Hmmm...and if he had to smuggle drugs because he couldn't afford to RENEW his CDL any other way, doesn't it sound like he must not be making enough money to support his family as a driver in Mexico? I can't imagine he's alone. You can bet this is a pretty darned good indication of how eagerly all those low paid Mexican truckers will cross our borders in hopes of earning a much better income. At our expense, of course.
If he isn't earning enough to pay the cost of renewing his CDL (when its your livelihood, sure seems to me it would be the first thing you'd save/pay for!), what sort of condition do you suppose his truck is in? And do we really want truckers on our roads who have to become involved with drugs in order to drive? We wouldn't want them if they were American citizens, either!
I strongly urge you to see JohnO's post at http://www.expeditersonline.com/dcforum/DCForumID1/5598.html and to contact your elected representatives. His post provides full information on how to do so. It is imperative that you do it NOW. There will be a vote related to this whole issue on Tuesday or Wednesday. JohnO's post provides you with an example of what to say. I think you should add the information from the El Paso Times to your message - it goes a long ways toward getting across the point that allowing Mexican trucking companies to do business in our country will NOT keep our roads safe!
This is serious stuff, folks. There have been recurring posts lately about business being slow. Let me tell you, if you think its slow now, it will come to a screeching halt if the Mexican trucking program is allowed to proceed! Do your part to insure it won't by contacting your representative TODAY! Yes, you CAN contact them today - they can all be contacted internet. Some have direct email addresses, and some must be contacted via a forms system on their Congressional websites. This site will link you to the address or form to send your message TODAY - http://www.conservativeusa.org/mega-cong.htm. Note that it also includes fax numbers and suggests that a fax is better than a mailed letter when it needs to get through quickly, so that is another option. Don't just contact your Congressman - contact both your Senators, too. In addition, I'd think it could be good idea to contact every representative from Ohio. There are so many expediting companies headquartered there that this should be an issue of interest throughout the state. If you know of other states that also have lots of expediting or trucking companies headquartered there, please post them so we'll all know to contact all of their representatives also.
Thanks everyone for doing your part on this!
