How Many Know Their Cost Per Mile?

Talking with friends today, it came up how a large number of owner-operators and drivers are frustrated by fuel costs (who isn't?) and confused because they don't know anymore (if they ever did) how much they need to earn to make a load worth taking. In other words, a large number of drivers do not know how much per mile it costs to operate their truck.

My question is, what percentage of people driving expediter trucks today know their cost per mile? What is your best guess? 10%? 30%? 50%? Just asking out of simple curiosity.

I ,for once, think that in many cases it is irrelevant !

In expediting you cost per mile rules you life and those that do not know it are flying by the seat of their pants. As the load pay tightens up the cpm becomes more and more important.

I do not think very many people know their true cost per mile. Seems as if some people we talk to say they will not take a load for lower then a certain dollar amount but that number was plucked out of the sky no from facts.

I think a good question is how many people know how to find their cpm? How many people run a P&L statement each month? How many know from week to week or by month what their fuel costs per mile. Each number is very important to us on which loads we accept.

Depending on the week I'm anywhere between .72 cents up to .90 cents a mile if I have maintenance issues it's as high as 1.20 a mile.

I dont base my cost per mile by the month. Mr Murphy might show up and bite you in the rear.My cost is based on the 5 years that I depreciate my truck.At the end of the year what ever isnt spent is kept for Mr Murphy.The fuel cost will vary,but my expenses are pretty close every year.
