Do you lack self confidence so much that you can't put yourself out there without fear of reprisal???
Say what you say and mean what you say...
If it is important enough to spray it then "own" it "defend it" and live or die by it.
Lest you be a punk
You may not like what I have to say and sometimes I have to reevaluate my own stand but believe me when I say it comes from me.
I do not, will not hide behind a veil in hopes you find me or what I have to say acceptable.
I prefer you would not either.

Mike,

Are their attempts at creating false accounts? You bet, however Dreamer has a few tools to sniff these bogus users out. Once a bogus account is found - it is deleted.

Dieselphreak"s sig line says it for me: "It's better to be hated for who you are, than loved for who you are not"

It's always worked for me Cheri.

I can kinda see some reasons why one would try a second account. My first fleet owner browsed this site extensively, so at times I wished I could ask questions without him knowing it was me, but a few PM's to members helped me out instead.

Full names and home towns in the profile earns a little extra credibility in my book. Please don't reply with something like being worried about a stalker. C'mon...

A screen name is an alais. Mike Ward; alias Mrgoodtude. Are you referring to people that register on E.O. with false names?

Highway Star, now that Mitch is gone who will search for the DuFranes?

I agree with Highway Star: putting your name and city/state increases your credibility. Even if you list some ridiculous hobby, just for fun.:+ :p ;)

365 aliases are required, one for each day of the week.

At the end of the year toss them all out and start over.

One of the biggest mistakes you can make in an online forum is being more concerned with replying to who said it, rather than to what was said. Certainly, after a given amount of time and familiarity, it's quite natural to begin to read between the lines and "color" the meaning of a post based upon who wrote it, and then you'll give a reply based on those between-the-lines suppositions and familiarities. But, a new poster or one that you're unfamiliar with, all that really matters is the text they've written and what they are trying to communicate. And wanting to know their super sekrit motivations for making the post is irrelevant, and that alone can color and cloud replies to the post.

Also, for example, I may very well want to pose a thought that will receive unbiased replies that are based solely on what the subject matter is, and not in any way on me or my prior postings.

I see a lot of replies to unfamiliar posters that have a wary, almost "who are you?" feel to them, as if the poster is not to be trusted enough to feel at home here unless they bare their sole first in an introduction. That comes dangerously close to clique-ish, and it's something to be mindful of, I think.

Yeah, I know, the goobers abound that will create new screen names just to stir things up. It's usually pretty easy to spot those, tho.

Good point turtle the message is well received,
You make alot of valid points.
It has been said that we sometimes are viewed as entertainment as opposed to an informational resource. I don't believe that was the original intent of the forum.
I posted a valid question in that regard.

By the way Mitch Hedberg "did rock"...
"I am staying in a motel can't tell you which one but it has 2 trees":p
" A severed foot is the ultimate stocking stuffer"
"I wish I could play little league now. I'd be way better than before"
My lucky number is 4 billion, that doesn't come in real handy when your gambling. I'm gonna need some more dice, 4 billion divided by 6, at least.

I've heard the arguments in favor of anonymous posting and just don't buy it, well, except for Dieselphreak and his example involving a fleet owner. Since it wasn't about him bashing anyone, just seeking info, that's understandable. But, I think this is more about ideas and opinions. In that arena, we should stand by who we are. How does someone knowing who you are change what you say?

I think Hedberg was a funny guy. I'm obviously not as familiar with him as others here. I love to laugh. But when I'm in a sour mood, not much will make me laugh. That "picketing" line made me laugh when I was in one of those moods. So to everyone, I say, "Temporarily stairs. Sorry for the convienience."

I've been visiting this site off and on since 2004. It seems that the replies to some of the unfamiliar posters have only recently taken this turn to one of distrust. I'm not sure what has caused this, but I hope it doesn't continue, because people seeking information will look elsewhere.
Oh yeah, I'm Pelicn (Judy)on every board I visit :)

My guess is that it would be caused by the knowledge that when some people create a new identity to post, you don't know who you're talking to - and I want to know who I'm talking to. Dieselphreak pointed out that private messaging is here for those things that are private, so I don't really see the need to disguise yourself. Say what you mean, mean what you say, and be prepared to explain if it's misunderstood, defend if it's challenged, and get over it if it's unpopular. Oh yeah - and smile when someone says "I agree", and when you get a "Bravo!", you feel all warm & fuzzy inside, too. Communication is worth the aggravation, In My Opinion.:)
