How it should be

We just ran into another road closing in WY. We were smart enough, and have the ability, to get online while running and check road conditions ahead. We learned of the closure with enough warning to get off the road and have a safe parking area rather than running up to the point of closure and having problems.

I was talking to a CRST driver next to us. They were warned of the closure by their dispatch over the C-Link.

OK, I think that is a GREAT IDEA!! All carriers should be that pro-active and pay that much attention to saftey.

Yeah, my carrier never even acknowleged the C-Link msg we sent them informing them of the problem. That bodes well for contractor relations. :(

Gee, can't tell you how many times I have thought that when approaching questionable weather.

Have you made this suggestion through the appropriate channels whatever they may be?

BTW. I can never get a good signal on my verizon air card during those times of crisis. What is your method of internet access?

We have a Verison Mi200. It does a little better than our air card did when the incoming signal is weak.

Yeah, we have talked to our CC about this in the past many times. I might try a direct email to a "bigger wig". Sure is a shame that is needed. This type of pro-active safety SHOULD be a given.

There is an option on the VRU for suggestions. I am sure it goes directly to . . . umm . . . . uh . . . . hmm . . . who knows:confused:

Oh, I just remembered! There is a suggestion box thread on the FECC forum that some delusional contractor put on there. I am sure that the FECC executive staff gets up every morning and checks that box while they are having coffee.

LOL!! Yeah!! It is not only a FECC problem. Many carriers do not put safety to the front as they should.

Soon, very soon!! LOL!! I can't wait for someone "back there" to ask me how the roads are. I find it amazing that I, as a single truck O/O, MIGHT just have better access to road information.

.

They also get instructions how to tie their shoes...

knowing the roads conditions ahead ,is why you get paid a bit more...
(Yh'a,i know, they wouldn't let you run I-5/15 even if you'v asked...) but most carriers will...some will even pay the extra millage.
Dido many times B4... :)

on a side note , i have being in your place a few times . when they finally open the road, keep sitting for 3 ,4 more hours ! -you'd br glad you did.
so many times they open it , and there a road train of thousands of trucks stuck behind one single axle pup trying to go up the hill. just not worth it.

You might be surprised to know how many of the office staff read this forum on (at least an almost) daily basis.

Maybe that is what they are doing instead of paying attention to what is going on out here. We have been getting critical check out time notices, personal notes asking why we are not moving all night long. That is in spite of regular up dates that we have been sending via the C-Link. I also would believe that they, as do most large carriers, have internet that is at least equal and most likely better than we do. They should know what is going on. No valid excuse to my way of thinking.

Sounds like the Clink is, like the QC, a major asset to the carrier, not so much to the person behind the wheel. Who pays for being beeped with inconsequential msgs [often at the precise time they've fallen asleep after driving all night to deliver early in the am ], while very important info like satellite directions to shipper & cons [I'm still cracking up over the directions 'turn at the dairy barn", which proved to be an ice cream stand, in the FedEx forum - it's hilarious, and at the same time, not funny at all], and weather & road closure information isn't provided when it could make a big difference.
Nope, I don't miss it one little bit.
PS I sent an email to J St Pierre at Panther 3 yrs ago, requesting that Safety msgs of a noncritical nature be sent in late afternoons - didn't make much difference, though.

Cheri, Just hope you don't mind the interjection of this, but the CLink is FedEx's title for the qualcomm unit.

I thought so - but the only Fed who ever let me inside their truck was TeamCaffee, and that was years ago. And I didn't notice the QC, because I was in awe of the toaster, lol. [I love toast, but hate going to a sitdown place to order it to go, ok?] Now I have my own, and use it often.:D
