How are things going this year?

I was wondering how things are going "freight wise" for all of you lowly cargo van drivers this year. Are freight volumes picking up yet? Are the rates getting any better? I'm gonna try and get back out on the road again next year! It's getting real old real fast just sitting here at home dwelling on my illness. Any how, let me know if things are improving out there. Thanks ahead of time for all of your responses.

I decided to take a break from EO for a while. I mean there really isn't a point in posting on here if I'm no longer driving. I don't have any current relevant information to provide the EO community with. For all I know things have changed over the past few months. But I seriously doubt that. How are things going at Bolt? Are they keeping you busy?

Sitting is good, but I rediscovered fishing, more 3 day trips, a few more Long Island Teas, lots of Marinas I have not discovered yet( like watching the boats come and go ), and drinking more LITeas....Florida is good this time of year, all the Yankees are gone for the most part as in vacations are over. Lots of small camp sites off the beaten path. All I need is a gps, push the button that says avoid the daxn interstates and maybe an Atlas or so and thats it, well maybe a few more Long Island Teas for good measure.........while sitting still, lol....

Hi blizzard, welcome back from your 6 months break. Hope you'll be back on the road real soon. It's generally going to take about 24 months to be free from that annoying pain. Hope you getting lots of help and support.

Freightwise, it's less active than last year. But for you, you'll do well no matter what :)
Get well and get back on the road:) :):)

Well Blizz....as you know this business relies a lot on shippers errors, bad quality parts, Logistic management errors, inventory errors....when everyone does their job...it slows down...the idea is NOT to ship expedite because like dead head miles its a direct loss from the profit margin....
then pile on the over abundance of trucks and zingo....
These IDIOTS that think freight should be always available/busy need to go to Ikea and have their brains reassembled....

OR, don't run that kind of freight.

Auto parts expedite seems to be the foundation or say building block or core....then there is the say R&R, food industry, military or major mechanical breakdown of a vital machine....which usually has a real expedite need....if you'd take auto parts out of the equation we could probably eliminate 50-60% of ALL truck classes...

Things change, always do. To stay in business we have to change with it or find a new business. It is that simple.

It's funny that you mention auto parts. "Just in time" delivery of auto parts is probably where expedited freight got its start, and it was a deliberate decision by the auto companies. Seems expedited might be a little cheaper than maintaining a warehouse full of parts, with all of the expenses that go with that.

i want go fishing its to darn cold up here ready to relocate south..lol...any free beaches down there

Too cold to fish? Never heard of that problem before. Up here we fish 12 months out of the year. We would fish more than that but they won't give us any more months! Soft or "hard" water, makes no difference. Some fish are easier to catch and taste better through the ice than in warm water. Too cold to fish, that's a good one! :p

I would think not .... A van or truck every 4-6 hrs is in no way profitable....auto production was much different way back then..... Now many models share the same platform and share many of the same parts.... And many a time we see they really don't need the parts but the supplier dropped below inventory/ contract number of widgets and the auto makers punish them by making them expedite the make up parts.

Isn't most of what many do just LTL ?
Many will haul a pallet or two cheaper than an LTL carrier, more convenient because of 24 hr pu and del, with less damage because of less handling.

Yup I'm definitely going to come back out in March. I still have quite a bit of money sitting around to buy a new van. Probably a 2008 - 2009 with power windows and cruise control this time around. I'm not looking to get rich. I just want to get around a thousand miles a week at around a buck per mile. I can survive and do everything that I need to do with that amount of running. I hope it picks up a little more next year. Any how, thanks for all of the input; and thanks for the philosophical debate on JIT freight OVM lol.

Its going great if you don`t mind running for 1992 rates.

I totaled up 15 consecutive runs in Sept 1992. Result $4450. Then I totaled 15 for Sept 2013. Result $4273.

I ran the CPI( Consumer price Index) and found out that 1992 dollars of $4450 should be $12,630.
