How About A Chat Room.....

Just a suggestion but with all the discussions on what should and should not be allowed in which thread and who will be allowed to police it....coupled with the name calling and more than one rude suggestion that someone's opinion shouldn't be where it was or come back when you have something intelligent to say.......whew.....

Hows about a chat room?? Members could post their locations and then if they wanted chatter about the weather or loads or whatever is on their mind at that particular time, they could join the chat room. If a member entered the chat room and didn't want to talk with someone already there, they could leave. Lots of bantering could be done in the chat room, it's done on other boards and it's been discussed here before......

Never gonna happen. If the chat rooms were started for banter, just like the non-banter threads will eventually have some banter tossed in with the important information that people come to this site to get, the banter'd chat rooms would have important information tossed in, as well. And since the chat room discussions can't be logged and organized where people can get at and obtain the information, it defeats the purpose of the site. Plus, if chat rooms got popular, that's less page views of ads that will be made, thus reducing the ad revenue, and that ain't gonna happen.

If you want chat, EO already has options for IQC, AIM and the other chat programs. People can indicate whether they are online or offline with their messenger programs, and the appropriate icons appear in their Profiles and under their avatars. And most of those programs allow for on-the-fly creation of chat rooms, anyway.

Chat in real time has one fatal flaw - it typically does not archive conversation that is searchable or consumable for information. For example - in the course of chat, someone talks about their APU and how great it is, the service provider etc. It's all lost, so to speak.

I see the point....there are ways that could be backtracked but if you're not in the mind to do it, then it's a dead issue.

You may want to stock up on the chill pills instead.

My experience with chat rooms over the years has been it quickly downgrades to "Flaming". You even see a fair amount of that here. Anonimity seems encourage Chat room "Rambo's" much like what we hear on the CB

I asked about a chat room many years ago for EO. Another site has a chat room but you never see anyone in the chat rooms.

many have tried and many have failed...it is the whole task of switching threads that somehow is a problem...and maybe the fact of being told where to go....

Maybe that's what the Layover Lounge was envisioned to be, but it didn't evolve that way.
Members want to chat - and we all do it, just to different degrees, so there ought to be a place specifically for that. Kinda like JamminJim's 'Thread you can use' post, but updated to reflect what the current users want. Hence, The Weekly Pickle.
