Hose blows out.

Mrs. Layoutshooter had the distinct pleasure of having a coolant hose blow out just after we started up the mountain going west on I70 out of Denver. We had JUST left the TA, saw no problems there. Only went about 15 miles when it blew. It only took 2 hours for a truck to come up and fix it. It was the hose behind the fuel tank. It runs from the engine to a junction box and then to the APU from there. I cannot see that hose to check it. I think that I will have ALL of the APU and sleeper hoses replaced when we get home in November. What a pain!! :(

Why on earth would you choose to take this route ?

if you go and change all those houses ,it will be the best to consult a place that specialize in those . from your post it seams like the truck engine and the apu radiator are integrated .
with some modifications ,you can build it smarter .

i have always installed valves going back to the apu ,you will need 3 . some valves/hoses do not react well to antifreeze, always buy an oversized valves. get them insulated, and so on ...

Most truck stops sell a product called emergency tape. Great stuff and saved my butt when I had a coolant line (the big one) spring a leak on a recent trip to San Diego Ca. I was on I-8 climbing the Black Canyon (also known as devils pass). Just wrapped some of this tape on it, topped off with antifreeze and down the road I went. Took about 15 minutes and I was rolling.

Get a roll of this tape to keep on board. You never know when you might need it and save yourself from a road call!

Yes, the APU is piped through the main radiator. There are valves as well. The hose just blew out. All the other hoses are the same age. I don't know what else you mean. You still need to run hoses all the way back there and to the sleeper.

I thought it would be a good idea to mention the first time to get all the hoses replace but I thought ... you wold have thought of that in the first place.

This last repair DID replace every hose that comes out of the junction box. It is NOT leaking prior to the box. The box it self does not seem to be leaking. It is dry. I have shut down the valves. No more leak. Also NO heat or A/C in the sleeper and we are now unable to use the APU. All four lines have now be replaced. Who knows what it is. I will finish out our time before we go home then get it into the shop by the house. They are good, they will find out where that leak is. They have not failed me yet.

I would have replaced all the hoses and clamps to begin with. But I would normally done this as preventive measure on a scheduled basis if I had that setup.

The first repair was done roadside. It did not leak for a week then started again. The second repair was done in a shop where we could do the rest. All new hoses, clamps AND "T" junction. Still leaking. They were scheduled to be replaced in December. I am at a loss as to where the leak is now. It is AFTER the junction box and past the valves.

A lot of people don't even think of scheduling replacing hoses.

I don't know how it was installed or where to look without seeing the truck but it seems that maybe you should be there when they work on it and map the hoses all out.

Those hoses run along the frame behind the passenger fuel tank. They cannot be seen from below. They are encased in plastic hose covers. The new ones are now covered in hose. The guy split a larger hose and covered them with that. That is to protect them from rubbing on the frame. I will see about being there when they do it. It is going to be a tough week without the APU or heat.
