Horse slaughterhouses may be coming back

It's not part of American culture to eat horse meat, except for cases like the Donner Party. I heard some mention on the radio recently about legislation condoning the slaughter of horses for human consumption. I always felt horses should enjoy the same protection as cats and dogs in the United States. Apparently, our legislators see this differently. We own three horses and a boarding stable.
There are too many unwanted, unridable horses in this country and sending them to a slaughter house would be fine with us. There are countries and groups of people around the world that have eaten horse meat for generations.
Many people starve there horses or turn them loose in the forest because they lack the money for care or feed. They are not like a dog or cat where finding them a home is relatively easy. Especially untrained, unbroken, psycho horses that would love to kick your brains in or stomp you to death.
Slaughter houses also set the minimum value for a horse. A seller would always know that if he couldn't get xx dollars he could always sell it for pound on the hoof.
Just my opinion, but we do have an interest in this issue.

After getting our truck bumped several times by a heard of wild (feral) horses enroute to Glacier National Park. I told the Ranger on duty what happened and she said they are a big problem in this area. "Many owners who could no longer afford to keep them just turn them lose." The event itself was an awsome experience (in the safety of the truck) but I can imangine if I was on foot (like the many hikers in the area) it could by deadly.
