We’re a couple (empty nesters) interested in getting into the Van expediting business. We currently reside in Michigan, but would like to relocated to the Dallas area before we start this new adventure in our lives. What are the advantages / disadvantages? Should we start as being based in Michigan and move to Dallas or move first? All advice welcome. Is there an advantage of what company to contract with if based in Tx. ;)

tx is well out of the loop and always once you get out to tx you are a long way from home
if your going to move the perfect place would be some where up and down instate 75 as that is in middle of expedtie world
dayton/columbus/ cicin would be one of best area's as you would be able to get home most often and also alot freight comes out of those area or close and not to far away from others tx is just to far out of the loop from home

If you move to TX and start a new career at the same time you introduce two HUGE stressors into your life. If you give expediting a try first to make sure it works out, you only introduce one (a career change). Your first few days and weeks in expediting will likely be a challenge as many new things hit you at once. It will be easier to deal with those if you do not also have the many new things of a new community entering your lives too.

There is an advantate in that TX has no state income tax. But if you purchase a van of your own, the tax deductions related to that and other business expenses will likely offset the TX tax advantage, at least in the first year or two.

Many thanks for the replies & info. We are definitely down sizing and relocating to a somewhat warmer climate. Where that will be is still undecided and are open to suggestions, since this forum reaches so many people. Long gone are the days of 6 kids, 3 floors, and 5 bedrooms. We are semi-retired as parents but still on call. Change is inevitable and we will adapt.

Tennessee is very nice and is fairly easy to get back out of. (load wise)
Somewhere near Atlanta would work too.

NC is ok for freight but doesnt come close to TN. TN rocks. No personal state income tax, pleasant climate, freindly people, you ve got the mountains, Good roads, 70 mph speed limits. TN is THE place.
