Hiring a driver

Hello and Happy New Year to all. I would like to ask about hiring a driver. Currently I have a 1 ton cargo van. I would like some info on pay scale or percentages and the like. I need to be fair and would not want the driver to feel cheated. Also do I need to provide workmens comp or is that the company I'm leased with concern. I have written to the forum before have have gotten some very good advice. I feel we have a great community here and am very grateful to be able to tap into such a great resource. Thanks

All I can tell you is the contract I had with a van owner. I hope it will help you. We had a 60/40 split of all revenue from van. I paid fuel, and tolls. Also any minor repaires under $25.00 Headlight/Wiper blade ECT. You pay all other costs. QC fees and insurances, oil changes, ECT. As for workmans comp. I don't think that comes into play. Your driver is a independant Sub Contracter under you. Now with the fuel as high as it is, there are surcharges that should go 100% to the driver for buying all fuel. Hope this will help. Be Safe & Profitable...Butch :) :) :)

I really think it would be hard to hire a driver and have both of you make a reasonable profit . Did you try just figuring what your profit per mile was and how much of it you'd be willing to give a driver ? Figure if the driver chose not to drive as hard as you cpm on insurance , taxes , truck payment ( if you're making one ) would be higher if less miles were run . These expenses as well as operating expenses need to be considered .

Yea, I'm trying to work the details out now. I know the profit would not be as much, but I'm hoping this would allow me to get into a D unit and keep the 1 ton rolling also. And yes I have a truck payment. But, I don't really consider it much because I traded my truck I used for my everyday driver for the van. I was making the payment on the truck but could not use it to profit. So, now at least with the van I can make some money with it. Also, with me getting a driver I could send him or her out on the runs I can't do. So, we really would not be splitting up all runs. Thanks for the input.
