High Winds

That brings back memories of years past pulling box trailers, especially empty ones. Had our close calls a few time while crossing Wyoming and other states! They get some strong crosswinds there. I even road out a hurricane (95mph sustained winds) at the Wilco in Haw River,NC once while hooked to a fully loaded reefer trailer. Almost went over several times!!!

When you think about the wind resistance a 48'-53' box creates verses a deck trailer, well theres no comparison! I have no desire to ever pull a box trailer in the future. Fortunately the loads we haul on our deck are never equal to the wind resistance created when pulling a box trailer. Now we just worry about the wind resistance our big house creates! LOL

A few years ago we were hauling a paper load (44,000lbs) down the New York Thruway when a gust of wind moved us from the right land to the left lane, just pushed the whole truck and trailer sideways. Luckily there was no one beside us at the time. We decided to park it after that. No sense tempting fate a second time.

Hey Streakin', must have been 09/22/89, hurricane Hugo, right?

Mike

Yepper! I was on my weekly tropical plant run for Midwest Coast Transport at the time. I was trying to stay ahead of the storm with my weekly multi-stop run. After deilivering to my Raliegh/Durum customers my Winston Salem customer called and said they had to close so everyone could go home and board up their homes. I decided to ride it at at Haw River. Boy what a night that was!!! My W/S customer received a lot of damage and it was two days before I could resume the run. Tropical plants being sensitive like they are, well they were pretty much stressed by the time the last stops were delivered.

I have also driven through hurricanes along I-95 in NC,SC GA and FL trying to get back home That was borderline insane on my part!!!
