the wife and i have not been out there since Oct.07 running team for Fed Ex. so give me the good bad and the ugly on the freight as it is now,so just curious how the cruel world is now-a-days.Since the economy is going south i thought expedite freight might go that way as well, the wife and i are looking to go back out in about a month or so.

For us so far so good. This year started out a little slow but has really picked up. FSC seems to be keeping up well with the fuel prices and that is a huge help. Our outlook is this year will be a flat year with probably no increase in earning from what we made last year. So we will watch our speed and keep looking for ways to improve our chances for loads.

We've run pretty good for the first 3 months.
I think part of that is due to having the most qualifications that we can have. It opens up the possibility of more loads. Even though we run for an owner, we've slowed down, we deadhead as little as possible, we're more selective in the loads we accept, and we're watching our pennies.

thanks for the replies.i kinda sorta thought the freight was not really at it's greatest right now.the next few month's are going to be very tough in this type of industry. The wife and i have been thinkin of going back to Expedite coz.we really love this type of trucking, but it appears we might have to go back to T/T pullin a Reefer ppl.do have to eat and we can not afford to take a crap shoot on Expedite and lose. I despise T/T after S/T.

Our first quarter, 2008 run count, miles and revenue were down about 12.5% compared to first quarter, 2007. We attribute that to time off we took in 2008 that we did not take in 2007 and "breaking the streak."

Friends have told us, "Don't break a streak." By that they mean when you have one run following another and another and another, stay with it. Don't go home. Don't go out of service. Stay focused and stay in the groove. When you go out of service, you break the streak and it takes a while to get back into the revenue stream and recapture your momemtum.

Taking yourself out of service puts you at the bottom of the list for next loads out when yoiu come back in. Also, when you are in service, predispatch offers can come your way. When you are out of service, those same offers will be sent to other trucks. You don't get one run after another when you are not on a run or in service building dwell time toward the next run. When you are out of service, you have to start over from no predispatch offers and no dwell time. There are times when dispatch will call even if you are out of service, but that is not something to count on.

We broke the streak several times this year that we did not do last year (carrier training, family events, multiple dental appointments, truck repair). Thus the declines mentioned above. It is encouraging to hear from other contractors that they are running well. Watching our numbers go backwards is not something we enjoy.
