Readytago here are a couple comments on your thread
Just wanted to stop by and say hello and introduce ourselves. My wife and I have decided to get into the trucking business. My wife has been in the beauty service industry for about 10 yrs and makes very very good money. Me, I have been in the food and beverage hospitality industry for over 30 years and had a very successful career.
Many people have started the way you are talking. Family and friends often are not to supportive of the idea of leaving a successful career for the unknown but for many of us, it has been the best thing we could have done for us.
We have decided to Trucking businesss is the next chapter of our life adventure. I think expediting is what we will be doing as husband and wife team. We do have a couple of questions if we may?
Expediting is trucking and while we drive a "short truck" it is the same truck that the tractor-trailer people drive. To many people that are not involved with trucking think we are brain dead truck drivers and nothing could be further from the truth. Trucking has rules that affect everything we do from when we sleep or rest to how long we can drive. It is a business where we can never know everything and we learn something new every day.
First, do you think CDL B for both of us is sufficient? Or should I or both get CDL A?
You could get your Class A CDL but if you are going to drive a straight truck that would be money, time, and effort wasted as you would spend a lot of time learning to back a trailer and then have to learn all over again how to back a straight truck. Class B is all you need for a straight truck with a hazmat designation.
Second, should I get my CDL A then get at least 6 months experience then my wife will join me and make switch to Expediting.
My suggestion is for both of you to get your Class B and do this as an adventure together as it will be an adventure and it will put stress on your marriage. In the long run, though it will be the adventure of a lifetime.
Next wee is the Expedite Expo and I suggest you get on a plane and be there. If you are serious about this life-changing event there is no better place to immerse yourself and know if this is right for you than this truck show.
When we first thought about this 15 years ago we flew into the Expo and set in motion a very successful business. Here is the link for the Expedite Expo 2018
