FYI from OOIDA
Give any member of Committee a call or call Senator Lauutenberg and voice your concern

NEW JERSEY SENATOR FRANK LAUTENBERG, is a member of the subcommitteeThe phone number for Senator Lautenberg's Capitol Hill office is (202) 224-3224

He also voted against allowing mexican company drivers from entering the USA

TODAY, this afternoon (Tuesday, May 1) a Congressional hearing will be taking place regarding truck driver fatigue and the prospects of mandating EOBRs (electronic on-board recorders) for hours-of-service enforcement.

NO REAL TRUCKERS have been invited to testify at the hearing. The only witnesses that have been invited to testify at the hearing are government agencies, companies that make EOBRs and executives of trucking companies that already require EOBRs in their trucks (Werner, Fil-Mor Express).

The hearing is titled "Electronic On Board Recorders and Truck Driver Fatigue" and will be held before the Subcommittee on Surface Transportation (part of the Senate Commerce Committee) at 2:30pm EST today.

My senator is a member. I called both her Washington office and home office. Hopefully they heard from a LOT of people.

Until we make a unified effort to stop the invasive actions of our government into this industry we are limiting our end result effectiveness.

We as an industry must put more pressure on groups which claim to have our best interest at heart, OOIDA as just one example, to get off the sidelines and begin to take some sort of legal action or develop political recourse.

Yes, we all want our independence, we love the thought we can make our own business decisions, etc, etc - but when our we going to wake up and notice that each action like this by our government takes more and more away from our business independence.

When our we going to see that we need each other to be totally effective in matters like this. My guess is when it is to late!

Diane and I received an action alert from OOIDA on this matter. One of our U.S. Senators is on the committee as well. We each wrote letters to her and followed up the next day with telephone calls to her office. As soon as we introduced ourselves as truck drivers, the aide that answered the phone knew why we were calling before we even told him. The Senator's office had been hearing from numerous truck drivers on the issue and especially about the fact that people with views in opposition to onboard recorders were not being allowed to testify before the committee.

After the hearing I e-mailed OOIDA, offering to visit our Senator personally about this. OOIDA said that during the hearing our Senator asked several quesions of several witnesses about the impact onboard recorders might have on individual owner operators and small business people. She seemed to be asking the kind of questions we would ask had we been there ourselves.

This issue is far from resolved and additional hearings and testimony may take place that allow truckers and trucking organizations to be heard. Diane and I will continue our activisim as we are able to help make that happen.

While I have no idea what the final outcome may be, my point here is simply that letters and phone calls from truckers made an immediate and positive difference in the hearing that took place today. Truckers and interested citizens can influence events on Capitol Hill if they get involved.

You don't need to put any pressure on OOIDA. They are already working on our behalf. You need to make your membership known to everyone and encourage everyone to join. OOIDA is doing all they can with what they currently have to work with. They send action alerts out ahead of time so we know when we need to contact politicians. OOIDA is the only true friend we have right now.
