so i gave 2 weeks notice at work. talked to the owner the week before about needing steers. He said he would handle it.

Oct 1 I call e-1 to ask about this owner. I get his driver recruiter. I get a very good picture that is favorable. He even drove a replacement tranny to a stranded driver. When that proved to be the wrong tranny he brought in the correct one. Okay that is good but then the recruiter says he has trouble retainin drivers. He cites late delivery, mechanical problems, running out of fuel and delivering consistently late as reasons. Hmmmm, okay driver quality varies.

oct 5 was my last day. oct 8 was supposed to be orientation.

oct 6 he calls me at 1600 hrs and says the truck is not ready and we can't go until oct 15. he said he found out thursday and that he will call me back after getting it back from the shop doing the front end work.

here is where it gets bad.

oct 8 aro noon i have not heard from him so I call e-1 and ask if there are other owners looking for a solo. As it turns out I get his recruiter who listens to the story and mentions an opening I saw in the job classifieds. he will call that guy and ask if he will take a solo in a truck the guy wants a h/w team in he says. couple hours later the first owner calls and says deal is off. he said he was called by his driver recruiter at e-1 and that i am a fleet jumper and he has had that experience and the problems of it are not worth it. he said he got in late sunday night and that he called the shop monday morning. Well it is 1500 hrs I say. Why didn’t you call me earlier? i explain that i am without work. he had said that he knew thurs oct 4th that the truck would not be ready. i told him it would have been nice to call me so i could ask for one more week. i tell him i am just trying to cover my responsibilities. he grudgingly agrees. He seems to be changing his mind on not hiring me, his cell goes dead.

well here it is today and the truck has not moved yet for repair and he has not called back. i called him yesterday around 6 pm but no response.

i’m angry that he seems to have decided on breach of promise for employment and e-1 is as responsible as is the recruiter representing them.

i am getting a check for this week from my former employer but i have bupkiss for next week.

i still want to do this. my wife has her cdl b/hazmat info and is reading it. She has decided that she wants to do this N-O-W rather than be apart for weeks. i have applied to other carriers on the home page so now it is wait and see.

I called my previous employer and got rehired for monday.

Well it sounds like everything might have worked out for the best. Especially since your first job let you come back. You might want to wait until your wife gets her learner's permit then ya'll can go out as what they call a 14 hour team she passes the road test. That's if they even still have 14 hour teams. It would be something to check into.

You know a solo has 14 hours a day that he/she can be on duty and driving combined. A 14 hour team is a team that can only do 14 hours a day. See if your wife had a permit and was driving you would have to be in the passenger seat training/observing her. This would put you on duty. Therefore the two of you could only log 14 hours until she got her actual liscense. Once she passes the road test you 2 would have the full hours like any team. To get the permit she has to pass the general knowledge and air brakes tests. Then she can practice to take the test under your supervision.

There is a very simple maxim that was drilled into our heads in nursing school that can (and generally will, in a court of law) resolve most, if not all, disputes: if it isn't documented, it didn't happen.
As much as we might like to take someone's word as their bond, doing so is extremely risky: if their word turns out to be worthless, so is your claim. A person who speaks the truth will have it all in writing, or put it in writing if requested. Anyone who expect someone to trust their word alone, in a business relationship, is someone to run, not walk, away from.

I don't know how many fleet owners and carriers you interviewed before jumping in. Your story shows why it is wise to interview a bunch of them. Even if you have half-decided or fully-decided to go with one fleet owner or carrier, it is wise to interview a few more for information. If you are honest about why you are calling, most will be happy to visit with you.

An opening line like, "My name is ________. I am new to the business and have decided to run with (carrier name), and (fleet owner name). But before I make the final committment, I am making a few more telephone calls to leave no stones unturned. I'm wondering if I could have a few minutes of your time to see what you might have to offer someone like me and to learn from you what I should be careful of?"

If you have not decided on a fleet owner or carrier, say something like, "My name is __________. I have (or my wife and I have) decided to get into the expediting industry. I am interviewing carriers and fleet owners now. I'm wondering if I could have a few minutes of your time to visit?" Then have a set of questions prepared to start the conversation if the fleet owners agrees to spend time with you (most will). Also be prepared, as best you can, to answer the questions most fleet owners will ask you.

Before Diane and I got into the business, I inteviewed two dozen fleet owners and carrier recruiters by telephone. With fleet owners, I got their names from the Free Classifieds section here on EO (see tab at top of page). I would call one and say,

"My name is Phil Madsen." My wife and I are thinking about getting into expediting. I would like to send you a one-page fax that introduces ourselves, and then call you back to talk. Would that be OK?

Every one said yes and gave their fax number. The nice thing about that approach was it respected the fleet owner's time. The call only took a minute. The fleet owner could decide how engaged to get in the next call based on the faxed intro. There is no point in talking to a fleet owner that does not want to talk to you. This process made it easy on both ends. We were good prospects and fleet owners were happy to visit with us, some at great length.

You can learn a lot about the industry by investing 20 hours or more to talk with recruiters and fleet owners. We talked to drivers too before jumping in. That mostly to verify that we had it right, what we had to come to believe about the industry, and especially about the FedEx White Glove opportunity that we elected to pursue.

Oh yea. I almost forgot. I introduced myself to fleet owners whether they had a truck then available or not. I started the process several months before we jumped in. Fleet owner trucks some available sometimes without notice as drivers unexpectedly quit or are are terminated. When you are looking for a fleet owner, it is good to have your name on as many fleet owner lists as you can.

Also, fleet owners know other fleet owners and some are friendly with others. If one fleet owner does not have a truck available, he or she may know another fleet owner that does. As a favor to a buddy, one fleet owner may refer a good prospect to another.

Another thing when you do decide on a fleet owner to work for you need to get a contract with your pay details on it. Plus who pays for fuel, maintence, tolls, and truckwashes. How long does he expect you to stay out? How long will he let you be home for? If you buy something for the truck will you be reimbursed? If you decide to quit what is the procedure he would like for you to use? All of this needs to be in the contract. If they tell you they are old school and don't do contracts run. I had that one bite me in the butt. This guy had two other drivers. One had been with him 15 years, and the other 10 years. So I just figured he would be good to work for. I found that not to be true and it cost me. Others may know of things you can request to be put in the contract that I forgot. Oh and have a lawyer look over the contract before you sign. Plus make a copy of all paperwork you send to the carrier and fleet owner to be put in your files. That way if your pay is short and they claim they didn't get something you can provide them with the info. Just to let you know what happend in my case the fleet owner was supposed to be paying for fuel. Well he conviently didn't get some fuel tickets and said they were advances, but he did get the pro bills that were in the same envelope. So basicly he got 60% of the run plus the fsc and I paid for the fuel. Not all fleet owners are bad though. The one I worked for after him was great. You just have to be careful. Plus just because someone has a brand new truck with all the bells and whistles doesn't mean they are good either. They could cheat you so they can make them big payments because they got in over their heads. I would rather run a 7-10 year old truck and be treated fairly than to be in a brand new truck and get screwed.

My two cents or advice:

Do not depend on others what one SHOULD do for oneself.

If you are in Business, any partners, owners of equipments is like having two wifes. There gona cause you problems. (as proof posted earlier) Not a problem I ever had in this business, problems can be solved but LIFE is much easier while YOU CALL THE SHOTS.

Just my suggestion, and I think its obtainable, easy NO but if there is DETERMINATION its accomplishable.

Good luck hope this encourages you.
