Since this thread has been hijacked as so often happens, I'll go with it.
I'm one who survived a natural disaster in the early seventies before
Fema was formed. The relief was provided by the Red Cross and the Salvation Army and was looked at as needed only by those who were not or were under insured. We were not one of those. After many detours around damaged areas and a trip to a hospital in the Dayton area, we arrived at my Mom's house 13 miles from Xenia late on the night of the tornado.
I tell you all that to say this, a few days later, I watched in disbelief as my Mom's neighbor's kids drug in supplies from the Red Cross that were designated for the victims.....remember, they lived 13 miles away from any of the damage.
Now fast forward to hurricane Katrina. Am I the only one that recalls gift cards being passed around like candy and the reports of them being used for high ticket items? I surely can't be the only driver that has driven past the "fields of dreams".....Fema's nightmare parking spots for all those campers that were not and cannot be used. Oh, how about all that ice that was never used and was driven somewhere up the east coast and allowed to melt?
The point is, there's so much abuse, as there is with
any government program, but it's far easier to scam in times of emergency. Do I think the government should sit by and do nothing, not necessarily and these folks are being air lifted supplies by the military so it's not like they're sitting on the top of their roofs screaming for help. I just think that the government should be the
last resort and down through the years, it's become the first place that people look for help and criticize if it doesn't come through like they think it should.
Let the states and local communities take on the bulk of the burden to help their own and you might just be surprised at how far the American citizens will dig down in their pockets to help that effort.
As far as Eric Cantor, he's now backing away from those statements but I
will say that if he received help because of a natural disaster and there was money
at that time in the Fema coffers then oh well......you can be upset about it all you want and it doesn't change a thing, just as I could be upset and say that he and no one else should take any of that help because it wasn't there for me "back in the day".......how stupid would
that be.
