Hazmat load and a generator/aux gas tanks and the

Aren’t you all lucky tonight, I am going to post two questions on one thread

First question

In the truck stop today, surrounded by Panther ii drivers, we were discussing generators. One person has a generator and a gas can (DOT approved) in his van, just sitting there in the open.

Now here is what I am wondering; is it alright to have the generator and gas can in the van while hauling a hazmat load? He claims it is alright to do.

Second Question

I am planning on getting another fuel tank fitted, I was thinking a transfer flow system, but I was told today (by transfer flow themselves) that the tank for my van will not meet DOT regulations. So I am wondering how many van drivers have aux tanks fitted to their vans and what kind is it.

Thanks in advance.

I don't think it is safe to be running around with a loose gas can in your truck. Just the fumes would be an issue, let alone the obvious danger.

The Sprintergen taps into the fuel line somewhere, but not sure if it is at the engine or the tank?
Fire equipment with generators usually taps off the main fuel line. You would think that would be legal?
Also, the Espar unit taps in somewhere but not sure on how it is installed?

I don't believe you can carry hazmat in a van.
I don't drive a van, but it would seem illegal, if it wasn't partitioned, or self contained?
Need a van expert on that question.

First off Im not an expert... but common sense tells me a loose
gas can in the cargo area in a van is an accident waiting to happen.
Second off, yes, cargo vans can and do carry HazMat. I have hauled
paint, compressed gas, and organic peroxide.
Now I've moved up to a straight truck.... wonder what sort of noxious stuff I'll get to haul now. If you bought it, a trucker brought... thank your local truckers!

If you can't haul haz-mat in a van, why would a major company like Tri-State make you have your van set up for placards. I don't know if they still do, but that was the case in the past. I've only hauled non-placarded loads.

The burning question here is, how did you get FedEx to take a '99 van?

I agree with all of you, one word can only explaine this persons actions. Fool.

I would never park next to anyone with a gas can and a line going into it. Now if it were an auxillary tank that was designed for this purpose yeah but not out in the open. And to be honest if the truck stop were full I would probably call 911.

Hi
If he got pulled behind the scale, which could happen since all haz mat must scale they would make P2 get another truck out there to transfer it.Legally he can't cross the Ambassador bridge or go thru the tunnel near Norfolk VA.Alot of hassle just to have heat.

I've heated my van with 4 wick candles in a coffe can for 3 years now.Doesn't put out alot of heat ,but it a very small area so u don't need much. Also is nice to wake up to a hot cup of tea in the morning.

Well I never got a straight answer about the gas can/generator but I did finally get an answer from transfer flow people, they made a mistake.

I have to get their accessible van tank and install it, it is DOT approved. This also means that I have to get another filler which is a DOT requirement. So all you Chev/GMC van owners out their who want to increase your range, there is the tank for you.

OK Highwaystar, my van is a 99, yes but it also is in really good shape (needs a paint job thanks to the stuff that I used to remove the stickers) and low miles. I have to have an inspection done every year by the safety people at FedEx and if my repairs exceed an agreed amount the van is off the road and no longer a FedEx van. Hope that answers your curiosity.
