Has your truck ever killed your Cell phone?

It all my year year in this business this was a new one to me. I had a driver blame his cell phone going bad on the truck. Yes, the truck battery's needed to be replace which we had four new battery's put in the truck. The truck has a APU that powers the sleepers and charges the battery's up but, but the driver still thinks the truck caused his phone to go bad. I have replace many charging systems on trucks over the years and never had one cell phone go bad. This is a new one to me.

Sounds like it's time to replace the driver.

Give the driver 5 or 10 dollars for his used battery then,,Send out a memo prohibiting drivers from charging or pluging anything in your trucks. If ya dont trust em to follow memo pull out all outlets. :)

(I honestly dont know if it is possible for this to happen so maybe it can?)

Put him on a bus and sent him home. Told him things wasn't going to work out with us. Yea, we lost money on this driver, but it was better to do it now before things got worse. I wish him well and maybe he can drive for someone else that can take the time to train him. He is very green and needs to be a co driver.

He said the battery for his phone is $50.00 to $60.00. I told him he needed a cell phone to do the job. That is when he blame the truck for his cell phone problems. I told the driver I have never had a truck EVER cause a cell phone to go bad and we don't pay for cell phone battery's. He started getting really really crappy on the phone at the TA and said he was putting in his two weeks notices. I said, no I think we need to end this today and I will pay for you and bus ticket home.

Dave I replaced 3 cell batteries when I drove for you at $50 a piece so ill call you later so we can get the reimbursement process started. Lol

No but seriously sounds like an idiot in my opinion. Good thing you cut it short before other blames got thrown around by him.

The driver is just a rookie, I wouldn't go call him names. We all was a rookie at one time in our life. He just didn't fit what we are trying to do with Mayfield Express LLC. Better to cut ties now before things go south and feelings are hurt. I do feel that he can be a good driver for someone if they have the time to work with this driver.

I've had a cell phone of some type or another since the mid '90s. I can't say I've ever had one of my vehicles kill a cell phone.

I can understand one scenario where it might happen, and that's if the voltage regulator goes bad. If it sticks "on" the alternator may go wild and send upwards of 20 volts through the system. If this happens, it sure won't do cell-phone chargers any good and just might send wild voltage into the cell-phone itself. I suppose a bad battery may cause it too, if the battery gets an internal short while the vehicle is running the alternator will try to feed that pig. This will show itself the next time you try to start, the shorted cell will drain the battery so much that starting will be next to impossible and if you connect a charger to get started expect the indicator to peg at the top of the range. While running, the alternator was feeding wild current through the system, maybe too much for cell phones that were plugged in at the time and--- doggone good thing the truck didn't burn to the ground if that happens, too. Though usually a fusible link will stop proceedings before that happens.

The truck has a APU also. The driver training this driver had no problem with his cell phone when he rode with this driver for two weeks during training. How can one phone go bad and ont the other?

If the batteries were totally dead, and somthing was on or pulling a draw, and it was an older cell phone, like ten years ago its possible.
