Just wanted to start off the day right by wishing everyone a Happy Thanksgiving! I hope this has been a good year for you, and hope you will take time to be Thankful for what you have. Most of all, I hope you get home.. if that is what you desire. I'm sure some are already home, and others are on their way.
Do you have a Thanksgiving Tradition?
One of our family traditions has alway been for the whole family to gather at 'Granny's' house. These family gatherings were a huge part of my life growing up, and affected my view on a lot of things. Much of our 'family culture' was based on 'goin to Granny's' for Holidays. Being a large family, this kept us close.
Everyone came.. brothers, sisters, aunt's, uncles, cousins, etc.. anyone who was availible in the family, and could make the drive. We always had so many people that invariably several would end up outside on the porch sitting at impromptu tables, rails, etc... and being as she was a traditional Southern Cookin Granny raised in Grayson, Kentucky, the meal was always huge... 'all the fixins' as they say. Everyone had their 'specialties' that they brought. One aunt had a special noodle dish she made, one had a special dessert, one was known for her Pecan Pies, etc...
Afterwords, being a traditional farm family...:+ :+ :+ :+ the guns came out! Usually some of the guys would head back into the woods for hunting. Other years, if noone felt like walkin the hills, it was just target practice. I can remember being a small child, barely old enough to HOLD a rifle, being taught proper safety, and how to shoot. Safety was VERY strongly drilled into us.
After all these years.. these traditions have come to an end.
This has been a rough year for my family, as my mother has went downhill greatly...with major surgery and a pacemaker implant. However, I am greatful that she is still with us, at 79 years old.
With my mothers health, she is no longer able, or willing to have our dinner at her home. So, the mantle, as it were, has passed to my oldest sister, and her home is in the suburbs of a large city.
It feels weird, and kind of "wrong", if that makes sense, to be preparing to go anywhere else but 'Home'. But, I am Thankful that our family will still be together, and I'm sure we'll start new traditions.
Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!
Be Thankful.
