Happy surprises

As I write this, we are about 90 minutes into an overnight run. Dispatch just told us to return to the shipper. One of the skids on our truck should not be on the truck and they want it back. This means more paid miles and more pay for the additional stop. It is a happy surprise.

Another that comes to mind is a pickup we once did. The load turned out to be HAZMAT whre it was not offered as such. Pay was immediately raised a bit.

Yet another was detention pay we once got. At the delivery, someone at the consignee had changed the combination to the door to the building to which we were to deliver, but had not told anyone what the new combination was. Security told us to take a nap while they ran down the man who was not at work that day and not responding to calls.

It's not all bad out here. Expediting has its happy surprises.:)

Some may remember the thread on here that I had going while this happened. I took a brokered load from Panther back in May, cross town run in Vegas. Picked it up from UPS and was supposed to drop it at some other company that was going to take it to the convention center. I get to the drop and they're refusing shipment. They're telling me that the truck with that exhibitor's stuff already went and they're not going to take the crate and deliver it. I called Panther and told them what was going on and they told me to sit tight. Four hours later Panther asked me if I would be willing to take the crate to the convention center, which was only about five miles away. When all was said and done I ended up with some detention and pay for another drop, amounting to about another $165 on top of the rate. It was frustrating, but the extra money wasn't bad, especially since the entire run, even with the extra stop, was only 23 miles.

I took a shortish load, [less than 300 miles] once, and was within 20 miles of delivery when dispatch called: "There's been a mixup - the consignee doesn't need the freight. Would you return it to the shipper?" Of course I would.....when I got done laughing. :D

Then you also have those times where you dh 200 miles to pick up a nice 1,000 mile weekend run and get to the shipper to find out they accidentally put it on a Yellow truck so you have to go to the Yellow terimnal and get your freight. While there you fall out of the back of the truck and srain your arm. Then you go up the road 30 minutes to your Mom's and she freaks when she sees you arm and demands to take you to the VA. Sure enough it's broke. Good thing the truck is an automatic and you get the load there on time.

Good thing Mom was home, I'd say! Did you seriously drive nearly 1000 miles with a broken arm?!

I had a below the elbow cast and it didn't hurt. It wasn't a straight through of course. I just took my fingers and put them in the diamond shaped hole in the middle of the steering wheel and the other hand on the wheel. I did just fine.

We picked up a load last week in Houston going to Philadelphia. We were within 2 miles of being exactly 1/2 way and the shipper wanted it back. We turned around, delivered it back to the shipper and promptly got another load picking up less than 20 miles away heading to New Jersey.
When you have a bad week you have to remember these good loads. :D
