GVWR for 18 ft box

I need to buy a used box truck to move and I am looking at a 1988 IH S1700 with a 466 engine, 18" box, and liftgate. The unladen weight is 14,900 lbs. Can anyone estimate the gvwr for this thing? If it's over 26,000 apparently I have to have a CDL in California. I am moving to Florida and hope to escape complications on the road. Don't know the DL requirements in other states.
Thanks for any info!

Look at the door jamb for a sticker with GVW. Or call an IH dealer with the vin number. They are called Navister dealers now. You probably need to write For Private Use on bottom of each door.Good luck. You're probably in for an adventure.

I will have about 3K in the truck after I register it. The DMV said I could specify a weight range so I will pick 15-20K. They said at that weight I could use my Class C license. I got one estimate from a mover that was 8K so I thought that was high for what I have. I may get an estimate on just the furniture without the boxes. It is too soon to tell if the truck will be roadworthy but I have 3 months to sort it out. This is a previous CA state vehicle sold at an auction.
If I decide to sell the truck I think I can recoup most of the expense. I'll have to say it was a "learning experience."

Thanks for all the replies!

Jeff, just for kicks price a uhaul for a Ca-Fl move one way. You'll be amazed. In 1977 I was a mechanic for Ryder. We had a guy come in, rent a truck round trip, get a couple college kids, and move people long distance. Even coming back empty he was making money. He did this many times per year. Now that Uhaul has eliminated the competition I imagine it's amazingly pricey.

The box size does not determine the gvw of a vehicle, and when you get pulled over, or into a scale house, whatever, they will go off of the door factory sticker gvw rating for the truck.Do as mentioned earlier, call Navistar, and have them run the vin#, and fax or e-mail you a copy of the line setting ticket (build sheet). It will have all the specs of the truck on it when it was built.A DT466 is an extremely good, durable bullit proof engine, before it went electronic.
