I am only aware of the publicly stated reasons of the unfair way the draft was applied to the youth of the day.
I couldn't even venture to guess how you saw things.
One could make the argument that the draft was unconstitutional, and it likely was. It was VERY unfair. First off, only males were drafted, which is as unfair as it gets. IF one is going to have a draft, it SHOULD be universal, NO exemptions, for ANY reason. One COULD argue, although I don't think it would be either constitutional or right, that everyone should have to do two years service to the Nation. That service would not HAVE to be in the military, BUT, pay would be the same, living conditions the same etc. THAT would be fair, anything short of universal is UNFAIR.
NOW, what I was getting at. When we had a draft, as unfair as it was, it still provided for a much greater cross section of society than we have in the military today. Having that greater mix would make it much more difficult to "control" the forces and less likely that those in the military would take up arms against their neighbors. It is easier to "eliminate" or "vet", to "shape" a force that would be more likely to fight against the people with an all volunteer force.
Which is why I say that I believe that the number of people in today's military, that would take up arms against the People may be at, if not an all time high, close to it.
