I read this piece from 60 minutes/yahoo about the 8 great American icons and thought what is wrong with 60 minutes.
They pick the list from the interviews that they did over the years.
Here is the list;
Neil Armstrong
Oprah
Ted Turner
Lance Armstrong
Kermit The Frog
Muhammad Ali
Yogi Berra
Katharine Hepburn
Now to me the only one I feel should be on this list, Muhammad Ali for a number of reasons. I don’t get the Neil Armstrong thing, when we have Chuck Yeager who did a lot more, but again the same goes for Oprah, who has leverage branding to a new level. Oprah seems to be praised for everything she does, including going to the bathroom. She has built an empire and seems to have this need to publicize everything she does, from the school in South Africa (yea what a great American she is, ignoring the fact we have problems here) to giving money away on her little junkets, always with the camera.
Lance should not be on the list as Ted Turner and what’s with Yogi Berra? I mean out of all the sports people 60 Minutes interviewed, Muhammad Ali, Joe Louis, and great amount of others to choose from that could represent America, they have Lance and Yogi?
I read in the comments that they should have put Bill Gates at the top which I agree should be topping the list, Gates who literally transformed the world much like Henry Ford. And as much as I would like to see gate, I think Steven Spielberg should be put on the list before Ted Turner.
And we always have Katharine Hepburn, who really didn’t do much to begin with. She seems to be like preverbal ‘have to include’ on anyone’s list, much like Jackie Kennedy-Onassis, another elitist snob. But again here is the press which now says Katie Holmes of all people is the "most influential" celebrities in Hollywood – a second rate actress to begin with is the "most influential" celebrity?
