GPS Question

What does everyone recommend for GPS unit. Do I need one if I have a labtop with Micro Soft Streets and Trips loaded on it?

I drive a cargo van and use the magellan roadmate 700. I wouldnt leave home without it and I havent had to use a map yet to get me where I'm going.

Dispatch calls with a load.I program the shippers address in,and away I go.It has nice voice prompts,if you go off course,it automatically recalculates your route.

It is all touch screen.Has restaurant symbols,atm symbols on it.If you touch one,it asks if you want it to route you there along with telling you the name of the restaurant etc.Has alot more features also.

I use a Garmin 2620, and it has proven to be the best investment I have made thus far in equipment for my straight truck. I won't leave home without it!

It was bought at Best Buy. It is pricey but the usefullness of it has outweighed the cost.

A laptop with MS Streets & Trips is the way to go. Also allows you to do record keeping, and you can have access to the internet, if you want that. With access to the internet, you can get on EO where ever you are!

I use both Micro Streets and Maps and the Delorme 700. Have an idea of route you want to take when depending on the Delorme I have saved hundreds of miles going my way and not the suggested route.

It is still a wonderfull tool that I to would not be without. For locals it is just simply a fender saver and a lawyer dodger if you get my drift.

I bought the M/S S&T 2005 GPS version for $139.00, and it came with the GPS sensor. I use it daily and it's a big help...you can figure your distance/time to destination from your current location...the best thing is that you can see almost instantly if you miss a turn, but if you monitor it as you drive that seldom happens. It also displays travel direction and vehicle speed more accurately than the manufacturer's units do.

i got ms streets trips 2005 and it came with the anntina, for a little over 100.00 been great, i been use street trips for yrs been great too, but really like the gps on 2005 good luck scott

I have used the Delorme Street Atlas 2003. It worked great, on my laptop. The only problem is, that laptops take up a lot more room than the Magellen 700, I purchased this year. Neither unit is set up for Big trucks, but if you pay attention, you won't get into trouble. It depends on your Bankroll. Delorme is much cheaper if you have a laptop. Add the cost of a laptop to it and the Magellan becomes the best deal. I love my Magellan and never go on any trip without it. (I Use it in my Car also, Plug it in and Go.) Good Luck. The Garmin 2620 is great.
I buy them at Best Buy and get the 4yr warranty for an extra $100.00
This way if I have any problems i can go into any Best Buy with a copy of the warranty and they replace the unit. I have not had to do it with the Garmin but done it with cell phones.

I just wanted to add, that I purchased the MS S&T because it has the maps for Canada. I've been up there 5 times this week, and I went right to the consignee's location everytime.

Microsoft Streets and Trips and Co Pilot Truck. Run both on a Laptop.

Do not waste your money on CoPilot. MS&T is the way to go. Best program and locator out there. My opinion based on experience and ownership of both

We ran using Qualcom "directions" until insanity set in! Went online to check out navigation systems and decided on Magellan 700. Searched for best price, printed out that info and took it to Best Buy. It took a manager to negotiate but we got it for just over $900 and we bought the warranty. Cant say enuf good about this unit! Use it in the truck, in the car and in other's cars when we travel with them. Took ALL the anxiety out of locating pick ups and deliveries. It is not perfect, still useful to look at map book and also use our brain, but we don't leave home without it.

The Magellan 700 and Garmin 2620 seem to be the top two units of choice outside of a laptop. I have the Magellan 700 and it is terrific. A few of the nice features are estimated time to destination based upon current speed, number of miles to destination, compass, and automatic re-routing if you miss a turn. You can also calculate routes with and without toll roads to check the extra distance against the cost of tolls. A very nice unit. I've seen them on the internet for $750.00. Garmin will run you a little more.
