GPS Causes Bridge Crashes

Noi, gps units are NOT causing bridge crashes, stupid people are. Having a gps, or any other toy, does NOT remove your PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY to know where you are going. Truckers have access to the Truckers Atlas, USE IT!!! Gees, how just plain stupid.

How'Bout raising the bridges ?...

or having a sign stating the REAL height of the bridge .
drivers in that neck of the concrete , are used to not obey traffic signs . heck , they spend most of the day traveling under a 12.6 bridges driving a 13.8 .

O'h , i remember , some years ago , reading about all the R.V's hitting the same bridges ...think they will be included in the bill ?

this is nothing new , in the name of Safety , they will regulate truckers...and make a dime while they at it.

Well, as Forest Gump says, "Stupid is as stupid does" It only takes a few extra minutes to check your route against the Atlas to make sure if there are any low bridges. You also have to LOOK where you are going in case the Atlas missed one. It all boils down to someone NOT paying attention. They must have been texting!!! LOL!!!

Don't be scared Slo....just very observant ;)
Moose, I agree, NY needs to put the actual bridge height, that would solve quite a few problems. As far as "blaming" the GPS? It's just like the every other issue, no one wants to take responsibility for their own actions!

Yes , but prison time ?
for what ?
some MAYBE public property damaged ?
it's not like they running the top off a school bus ...
this is the same old same old .... targeting truckers ,
blaming them for the state short hand ...
if this happened as often as they say , maybe the truckers are not the real problem here ?
it's not like a driver that hit a bridge is walking away , free and clear , this is a moving violation , and a preventable accident as it is , a driver that hit a bridge will most likely won't share the road with us any more the way it is .
this whole thing is uncalled for .
the whole concept of increasing penalty's to better our community's & prevent crime , is useless to begin with .

I don't see anything wrong with expecting those who do the damage to pay for it, especially since it's stupid mistakes causing it.

You always have to be careful. We had a driver last month that was following the truck routed turn by turn navigation on our qualcomms last month when he hit a bridge in Chicago. On top of the "truck" routed directions the thing was marked 13ft 8inches. Now qualcomms provider did mark that bridge so future routings dont go down that street. But, how pays for the $20,000 trailer that was destroyed and the cargo claim?????? We do! Cities should be responsible for any bridge strike that is marked higher than the vehicle height.

Yes, if the city has mismarked the height they should be responsible for any and all damages.

Read the article again, the point is that these truck drivers were going on prohibited routes and doing damage. They routed themselves with the GPS units for the shortest and/or fastest route.

Simple solution is to make the driver pay 100% if they go on prohibited routes, not the insurance or the company.

Now if the bridge is mis-marked, in my state it is the county and state DOT's fault, they are the ones who actually inspect the bridges and measure the height, they like NY take the lowest point and post that height on the bridge with that measurement.

Problem occurs more often in older cities. The city or state may have measured the bridge 20 years ago and marked it. Then you see an inch or two of asphalt added once or twice and 13ft 8 inches becomes 13ft 5 and you have an open top trailer!

Bridges should be measured at least every two years AND every time any paving work is done. Actual height should be marked, NO New York markings. That is just FAR too confusing and can lead to problems.

The way New York does it is totally stewpid!!! The last time I went to Brooklyn I followed another truck out. He told me not to worry, he knew the best way out. I was going under bridges that were marked way lower than my box. My rear end puckered up tighter than Nancy Pelosi's face!

I never went under anything marked lower than my roof but a couple times had to go through a 13'6" clearance. I liked it best when there was a t/t within sight that made it through fine ahead of me.

Taking personal responsibility is correct. These tools that we use are just that, tools. Even the handy old Rand McNally will let you down if you ignore detour signs.

The most important tool on the truck is our common sense (not very common anymore). We combine the information from three sources...our company's suggested routing, our gps, and our atlas BUT....with all of that technology, if we leave our common sense at home, we're hosed!!
