What is it, exactly, am I supposed to love here? The fact that someone tried to steal money and got caught and punished for it, not unlike the man who got caught and punished for raping an underage boy recently?

I do love the fact that the amir's name is Merv, Merv Mitchell. That's pretty awesome.

You REALLY don't see the difference between a father who is stopping his own child from being raped and the attempt to cut off the hand of a thief? If find that hard to believe.

No, I do see the difference. But my original question remains unanswered.

Got it. Yeah, this stuff happens all the time, though, where people take the law into their own hands and met out punishment on their own. Of course, it makes for giggity headlines when it happens in a mosque.

It also depends on the "timing". IF one is stopping a crime in progress, and the perp gets harmed, that is one thing. AFTER the fact is another all together.

People DO have the right to protect their lives and property. It is all about circumstance and timing. In the case cited, timing was WAY off.

Oh, I promise you, if I had a child that was raped, the timing wouldn't matter.

You got that right, or ANY child for that matter.

I do think you understand what I was driving at by timing comment.

Yeah, I do. But barring additional information, I have no sympathy for the guy, and think he got exactly what he deserved. It's not like he didn't know the rules there, or the consequences of not following them.

Except in our society, we don't cut off body parts as punishment. We do however, beat the living snot out of child molesters (when caught in the act).

Which guy? The thief or those who tried to use a punishment that is not legal under US law, or both? I mean, those who tried to cut off the thief's hand knew it was illegal and chose to do it any way. The LEGAL way to handle that thief, since he was caught, was to call the police.

Under the "timing" rule, had they use the machete on the guy while in the process of stopping the crime, it would not be a problem.

I would NEVER beat the snot out of a child molester, when caught in the act, I would shoot him,her/it and make sure they never tried that again.

Don't believe the shotgun would be my first choice if the kid was there. Don't want a stray pellet hitting the kid.
