Your desire to be sure before jumping in is good. But to be sure, or at least as sure as you can be in the unpredictable world of expediting, you need to be more specific about your priorities and goals. If "good home time" is a high priority for you, treat it as such and make it the starting point of your analysis.
Define exactly what you mean by "good home time."
Does it mean you will be physically home a certain number of days each month?
Does it mean you will be home in particular days each month (e.g. the first Fri, Sat, Sun and Mon of each month) and out the rest of the time?
Does it mean you run all the time except when you find yourself within one day's drive of home and you will then go home for three days?
Does it mean you will run hard for three months and then go home for one?
Each strategy has home-time benefits and each costs the revenue you lose by going out of service and the money it takes to get you home.
Once you define what "good home time" means for you, you can analyze the expedting opportunity with that priority addressed. It may be that expedting will not get you home as often or long as you wish and provide the income you also need.
