Going to be moving to Oxford, PA - what kind of wo

My family will be moving to Oxford, PA in the near future once we sell our home in Michigan. Work is pretty good in the midwest area, but a recent trip to Virginia didn't make the east coast area look very good for straight truck expediters. What is the pay like, how often are the runs, what type of freight is mostly ran, can you get extra miles due to the limited roads (especially in winter) around the mountains, and what expediters tend to get the jobs in this area? I am new to expedite owner/operator since December of 2006.

Hey Bubba,

Who do you work for??

We are with Panther and live in Falls, PA (a little country town between Wilkes-Barre-Scranton). We don't have much of a problem getting out of there but we usually pick up out of Jersey, New York or Conn. However, when we go back into service, we never take the empty move we are offered - would rather wait at home, than in a truck stop.

When we are in the Wilmington, DE area, we never have a problem getting a load from there either. Hopefully, it will be the same for you.

Best of luck!!

Thanks - that is good to know. I am in the midst of 2 companies and would rather not say who they are since I have to make a move in the next two weeks and I don't want to get painted into a corner to make a decision. What kind of miles are you getting? Paid and dead head? How many loads do you get a week? Any days of the week that are better than others?:7 :7

Hi

I don't know about a straight truck but that is a prime area for van loads.Philly Lancaster Downington and West Chester.Getting home will not be much of a problem either with the Harley plant being in York and Dupont being in Wilmington.Your only problem is going to be the competition, alot of truck sit in Rising Sun at the J and Elkton TA and Petro.Good luck.Real pretty part of the country that your moving to.Love them Early American homes, people really took alot of pride in their work back then.

We will have to move to an apartment since my wife is disabled and keeping up a house is too much work while taking care of herself and our daughter, who is in the early stages of the same disease. I do enjoy the older style homes, the Amish farmers and their markets, and the country side is really beautiful (even in the winter time). My in laws moved to Oxford last year and have a new home in the newer section of town which I got to visit recently.

We delivered once in Oxford. Nice town. Right down the road from the Flying J in Northeast, MD. You should have no problem getting out of there, or back home... depending on which company you're with.

It is hard to give you a good idea of the mileage we run - each week is different. Some weeks we can run 6 loads and other weeks, it may be 2. It all depends on where you are sitting and how the freight is moving. Last year, we were off 1/3 of the year and we ran a little over 133,000 miles and our DH was 3597 miles.

I am going to assume you are going to be running single, where we run team. I can tell you, from what I have heard from single straight truck owners - they do best if they stay in certain areas - I think I was told they only go as far as the mid-west and down to MS.
Maybe the single driver's can verify this.

Then, of course, you have the slow times of year. For us, it is January and July so we usually take our time off then. February and March can be a little iffy too.

Best of luck to you.
