I am currently leased to a company but I am thinking about going on my own. I had my own authority at one time for a big truck.
What do I need in order to go on my own with a cv.

Contact CIS, Shelly or John. They will write your policy, and then find your brokers. When your ready I will get the names for you that support the independents. Good luck. No authority needed for a c/v. Just reliable transportation.

John I was told by the powers that be that you would have to have a MC# for cargo vans to be legal. Most brokers want you to have this. Also if you factor your receivables they also want you to have this. This may have changed since 05 when we got our authority, I would sure check it out.
Thanks, Don Copeland

Operating authority is required for cargo vans. There is a operating authority for vehicles 10,000# and under, $300,000 primary and at least $5000 cargo. The only reason for this is to make sure you have insurance.

I know of several CV that run independent without their own authority.... they have insurance and run under whatever carriers authroity they are loaded for.....no authroity of there own....

Now if you are working finding your own loads, then you would certainly need your own authroity...

Your right Dennis. The only time you need an MC number is if you bid your own freight. Then you need 1 million liability, 100,000 cargo and your normal vehicle insurance. CIS in Toledo can give you all that, they are the best price and coverage and they will work with you.
When you get your own MC number you must maintain the insurance to keep the number and if you decide to get rid of the MC number you have to maintain insurance for 30 days after. If you don't do this and they catch it they will never issue you another number.

A few observations:

Those vans that are grabbing loads from several carriers without their own authority aren't really independent in my book. They're still running freight under someone else's numbers.

What precisely is the difference between a carrier and an independent? Absolutely nothing. Just the number of trucks. It seems that a lot of folks think that a carrier is one of those companies with an advertising banner on here and a large dispatch office, etc., but one guy booking and running his own freight is called "some independent." News flash here. There's no difference. If you have your authority, you are a carrier and with that comes a certain reponsibility.

As a carrier, you have to get enough money for the load to pay the truck and the carrier to still make a profit. That's what I did when I got my authority. I assumed that I (acting as driver) got X amount of money for the load and then my company also had to make something above that. There's no point in going through the trouble of looking for your own loads if you're only going to run them at the same rate you would get leased on somewhere else. You need to be compensated for the work you're putting in, both as a carrier and as a driver.
