I'm glad I found this site . I've learned a lot the easy way . You expediters deserve a lot of respect but after looking at all the angles of it I decided not to get into it . I've run too long , too hard as an OTR driver to be able to adapt to being idle for a day or more . When I am off I like to be able to relax and not be thinking I might have to jump up and run in the middle of the night . I've decided to buy a dually pickup and contract delivering campers . I'll gross more than I would running single expediting but will probably not net much more because I'll be running more and burning more fuel . Thanks again for all the info .

When I was at Express-1 headquarters this week, I met a semi driver taking off his stickers. He had only been there a week and had given up on the idea of expediting. I asked him why, and he said:
"They got me down to NC and I sat there for TEN HOURS!"
He told me he's just too anxious to be sitting. Still, although I understood, I couldn't help but laugh inside about the TEN HOURS thing LOL. I told him I just got finished sitting in Syracuse for 2-1/2 days (which was a mistake on my part).
I promised myself when I decided to get back into expediting that I wouldn't get impatient. There comes a time, though, when the cost of fuel gets overrun by the cost of time... and it's all a game trying to figure out when to move 300 miles back to the zone. I know now, better sooner than later.

Was that the guy out of our orientation group? I'd be happy with only a 10 hour wait at most. So far I've been lucky though and only got stuck waiting a long time over the weekend in Ky. I knew the weekend was likely to be a waiting game though. Other than that I've run several hours and then done a 10 hour break and run a bunch of hours and another DOT break. Looking at 1/3 more pay for 1/3 less miles makes it a lot easier to handle too. Too bad that guy didn't give it a fair trial.
Note to anyone looking into expediting, when you start be prepared to stay with your original company or owner for at least 90 days before even considering a change. You need that long to learn enough to know you are really ignorant of how it all works but also to know enough to determine if you should stay or go or get out. Anything less than 90 days is doing a disservice to both you and your original employer. My .02 and take it as you will.

No... he was from the week after, I think. Nice truck... just guess he'd rather put more fuel in it for less $/mi. I haven't had much time to sit either... except in Syracuse. But on my way back from there, I got a run out of Erie as soon as I passed it. Didn't even get a chance to shower LOL

Leo hit an important point right on the head IMHO. Don't be willing to chuck in the towel after a short time. You have to get a feel for the business and that cannot be accomplished in a week or two. The first week I was with Dynamex I had gone into the office to quit. Had enough I did. The branch manager called me into his office to talk. We talked, I told him why I was leaving (money, I know. Big shock 
) Anyhow, he asked me to give it a little time. I agreed and have been there for more than 18 months now. It has been an up and down 18 months but overall I am happy now. Making good money and home every night. In hindsight it would have been a mistake for me to leave after such a short time.

I am fortunate to have gotten a decent education along with good genes that gave me at least a little common sense. My mother helped open the Shamrock Hotel in Houston; in it's day one of the premier inns in the country. She hired over 3000 people to staff it and did the payroll for the hotel and that was in the 40's/50's when there weren't computers. My father practiced medicine for 50 years and was called on by Denton Cooley among others. Luckily for me, a little rubbed off from both of them.
I don't know nearly all there is to know and never will however some things are very basic, at least to me. That doesn't mean they are correct, just that they are basics for me. I really can't see getting into something as major as a career and not giving it at least 90 days. I am not certain that is long enough however I feel certain anything less is woefully inadequate. I post here in hopes of contributing something to benefit others just as I read almost all the posts looking for things to benefit me.

I definately give you props there Leo... what job out there can you learn in less than 90 days? Not many.. even a burger joint gives you a probation period. But so many people try this.. and then.. expect to be high rollin in 2 weeks.

Whenever I talk to anyone about our beloved field of expediting I explain to them that we (expediters) live in a world of averages. I'm glad that you guys understand that - and it will make you all the more successful in your careers in the future. The new breed of expediters are more prepared than their predecessors - Thanks to web sites like this one, and just plain doing their homework. Like the rest of the world, we are evolving. - X

Hey Hawk, I just read your note here and I wanted to scream at you. You gotta know better than to take a run like that. Hey I hope you are rolling. I want to say something to you that I hope you will remember. Don't go broke accepting long runs and don't be so full of yourself that you don't ask questions. Many guys do that and go broke. You don't have to sit 2 and half days at E1 if you manage your accepts and declines. They are very consistant with where they run don't get out of the freight lanes and you will be able to look back after each settlement and see how well you did. You got my number.raceman
