Gm van and delco parts recall

GM has stopped production of the Chevrolet and the GMC 2500 and 3500 vans because of engine fires.

But those who have purchased Delco parts for your van between February and to date may also be affected by the identified cause of the fire, the alternator.

Delco part numbers being recalled are;

15200110

15288861

15263859

15847291

These parts fit the 2500 and 3500 GM vans between 2005 to date.

Greg, do you know if this recall covers GM Delco reman alternators?

I have a 2004 Chevy 3500. The original alternator died at 260,000 miles. It was replaced at a GM dealer. 7 days later (262,000) it croaked. Got it replaced at a different GM dealer for free.

At 299,000 miles another dead alternator. Replacement cost, labor only, $128.00. At 324,000 miles, same thing. Replacement cost, free. At 350,000 miles, you guessed it! Replacement cost $169.00 plus I drove their loaner car 50 miles round trip to pick up the new alternator from another dealership.

381,000 miles and I'm through screwing around with GM alternators. I go to my friendly local independent mechanic and upgrade to a Rayloc 150 amp alternator from Napa to replace the stock GM 105 amp alternator.

At 428,000 miles all is well alternator-wise.

Looking through my past receipts, the ones that list a replacement part number state part number: 19151898. This number does not appear on Greg's list. Could be different because it is an AC Delco reman part.

Any thoughts on this issue? Any possibility of getting some money from GM? Will alternators be covered under Obama Care?

I should note that some of the failed alternators had a sooty substance on the housing as if the varnish on the wire windings got cooked. All failures were detected and dealt with when I noticed a drop in charging voltage. Well a couple of times I noticed my headlights dim and then I checked the voltage gauge. Anyway, no fires but I do think they got cooked.

I guess I'll have to call in and check on mine tomorrow to see if I have one of them. If I'm close enough to a dealer I may just go darken their doorstep.

Only if the ambulance that comes out in response to your myocardial infarction is built on a GM chassis, and then only if they were using the jumper cables to give ya a little "boost" when the alternator died.

At that point: 100% covered .... with no co-pay !

Moot,
Those are the only numbers on the list and I asked this morning and was told that it is only newly built alternators from Delphi's supplier that are cooking the vans.

If the van was made this year, have it checked.

DETROIT - General Motors said it plans to recall about 5,000 heavy-duty vans built in February and March -- and halt production and sale of the vehicles -- because an alternator may pose a fire engine risk, Reuters reported.

GM said the last eight digits of the vehicle identification numbers for the heavy-duty Express 2500 and 3500 series vans recalled are A1129327 through A1142523. The GMC Savana 2500 and 3500 series ID numbers run from A1128784 through A1901915.

About 1,400 AC Delco replacement alternators are also being recalled and may have been installed in vehicles in February and March, GM said. The recalled replacement alternators are numbered 15200110, 15288861, 15263859 and 15847291.

Those replacement heavy-duty alternators could have been used in 2005 to 2010 MY Express or Savana heavy-duty vans or other 2005 to 2009 GM trucks or SUVs.

My VIN is nothing like that and I talked to a dealer and they said my unit has no open recalls so I guess I dodged this one.
