Canada GM transmission issues

Hey everyone.

At work we have 2 GM Express 2500 vans. They are an '04 and a '07. Both had the transmissions fail on them at around 80-100 000km. GM fixied them under warranty. Both trucks have the gas, 4.3L engines. The transmission would start to shift gears hard and then would get stuck in first gear. Usually happened when transmission were hot. We use the trucks in a 50/50 split between highway driving and city driving.

My questions are

If any of you had issues with the transmissions on these trucks?

Could it be because we over load them? (weigth)

Could it be because the transmission over heat?

Any input would be great. Thanks in advance.

Just an update for anyone who cares.

The 07 is at a GM dealer(still under warranty). They are saying its an electrical/computer issue and not the transmission itself. We will see what they tell us on friday or monday.

These vans have the 6 bolt wheels and utilize the lower level transmission (the 8 bolt have a heavy duty). If you're over loading, running them hard in city deliveries then look to installing a secondary transmission cooler and check the transmission dipstick every month for colour change as this is an indication of overheating. The heavy duty transmissions should last 300,000 - over 600,000 km (my last gm lasted over 800,000km).

GM makes good transmissions but you do have to change the fluid and the filters. If you push them hard and do not watch you'll break them early as I know a delivery company in Barrie that broke the heavy duty ones in under 200,000km due to the harsh use by the drivers.
