A little bit of expedite trucking history here....there was an expedite trucking carrier in Ohio that started this service in the 90's - early 2000's.

They hauled every day, expedite freight, but at times, they could be offered an "on-board courier load".

On-board couriers were typical expedite owner operators who could travel at a moment’s notice anywhere in the world via commercial airlines. You would pick up a package at company, head to the airport, park your truck (usually a cargo van), pick up your ticket, head to the the gate and board the airplane with the “freight” in hand. Generally, no overnight baggage for you - you would jump the next flight home or maybe the earliest flight home.

They would haul freight to places like Berlin, London, Dubai or Hong Kong.

The layovers could be long.....

I did that back in the 80's with machined rifle parts. Hop on a plane in Buffalo with them as a carry on, transfer in Newark to Hartford, deliver to Colt. Fly home.

I made two of these "deliveries" in early 2001. At the time it sounded interesting, fun and a great way to see the world while being paid.

Trip #1: Deadhed to Cincinnati, Oh for a secured briefcase, to be delivered to a law firm in London, England. Had a six hour layover at Logan Airfield in Boston, then non-stop to Heathrow. During the flight across the ocean, plans changed and I was instructed to hand-off the sealed briefcase to a representative of the law firm once I cleared customs at Heathrow.

Another four hour layover at Heathrow, Boston, etc., etc. So much for any sight seeing.

My itinerary was iron clad. If I wanted to stay over in London after the hand-off, then I was on my own dime.

Trip #2: Thinking things would be different the next time, I did a second trip in June, 2001, babysitting a small health monitor used in specialized surgeries going to Madrid, Spain. More of the same, boring flights.

I consider these two "deliveries" interesting but very tedious and extremely boring. Had several other opportunities to "travel" but after Madrid, I politely refused.
