I am presenting this question to a recruiter as I have heard from great mentors in expediting in another forum "newbies".
I am seriously looking into expediting, but after running my numbers the OOIDA spreadsheet indicates I need to average 103,000 miles per year and get $1.15 a mile. I am looking to draw a salary of $50,000.00 gross a year.
Is the salary to unrealistic for a first year operator / driver as an expediter?
I am looking into a small to medium company that advertises on this message board. Yes I will be asking them about this also as well as many other questions. I still need to save up to three months of expenses for the expediting business, which is $9,936.67. This includes everything on the spread sheet including my salary. This maybe the biggest deterrent of all saving $30,000 before starting. I would be appreciative of your opinion.
As a side note I will be driving as a solo in a "D" unit. The truck will be a used truck, I am looking at one that is a 2004 with 519,000 miles. Just overhauled the engine. The cost is $52,000.00. I calculated fuel at around $24,375.00 per year at $1.95 a gallon for 100,000 @ 8 miles to the gallon.
I have been driving local as I get home every night the six New England states for the past ten years in a 27ft flat bed truck (33,000 gvw).
Thanks for any and all information that will help me in this desire to become an expediter.
