The bigger picture is control, our loss and the government's gain. We are steadily moving toward the land of the formerly free, especially with closet dictators like we have now.

How about if Big Brother wants to install cameras in the showers to see who is wasting water? Is that OK with you?

I live near Chicago, here we get lake water. It is metered, and I understand there are restrictions on lawn watering and so on... but showers? Nope. Besides, as Turtle pointed out, it makes no difference how long a shower I take here, it won't help or hurt California even a little bit. Southern California is desert country-- always has been. Modern irrigation is the only thing making the place livable. Northern California is dependent on Pacific weather for rain--- nothing I do here in the Western 'Burbs of Chicago can affect weather there.

As I read the second article, the only role "Big Brother" has here is funding [to the tune of $15K - peanuts!] a device to measure the usage of water in hotels. After that, it's up to the free market to decide whether it's useful or not - and I'm guessing hotels will be torn between saving on the water bills and alienating customers, so they'll install the devices, then pull them when guests complain.
