generator/APU's and fuel taxes

I saw a truck online that listed a separate fuel tank for the ProHeat unit. I thought it was unusual but liked the idea for keeping better track of mpg and overall fuel usage including sleeper comfort. Later I began to wonder if the fuel could be purchased like reefer fuel and not taxed since it's not being used for propulsion. Would the separate tank let you buy that portion tax free?

I would ask the fuel desk person about this. I think I have seen big trk drvrs fill their running tanks.Clear the pump then move forwarde to fill the reefer tank. The second fill for the reefer is prob exempt from road use tax. They must arrange this in advance with the desk. I would think sleeper use would qualify for tax exempt.

When I fill at Pilot, which is a rare thing, it always asks you tractor fuel, reefer fuel or both on the screen and you press the appropriate button. I'm not sure how it works since I've never done it before but am going to look into it. I think over a period of years it would pay for the extra fuel tank.

I would have reservations about a seperate tank on a generator.
Primarily because the fuel usage is so minumal. You would have to keep it heated in the winter because the fuel would sit in that tank for a long time unless you put something real small on. Then it would still be more prone to freezing up. Of course you could use additives ect. but that takes the original savings away.
