G.M. Alternator

Early yesterday morning, 8 days and 2000 miles after replacing my van's original alternator at 260,000 miles the new one goes bad. The sky was beginning to get light so I turned off my headlights and ran with only my parking and chicken lights. Was able to go about 15 miles to a Chevrolet dealer.

I presented the original receipt from the G.M. dealer that installed the alternator last week. I explained the problem and the time sensitive nature of my business. I was under load. The service manager said they would get right to it.

Is the audience seated? Are you ready for this? 45 minutes total from the time I walked in until I was motoring away. All free, all under warranty. Thank you Mr. Goodwrench.

An ironic addition to this tale is that load delivered to Motor Coach Industries in Pembina, ND. MCI happens to be next door to the Gastrak truck stop where I broke down last week on my way to Winnipeg, eh. Last week it was -33 degrees. Yesterday it was 26 and snowing.

When I bought my GMC van I had the dealer replace the alternator with the larger amperage model. When that alternater went out at about 125 thou, I had the original alternator to use as a replacement. I was on the road in BF somewhere and my spare was, you guessed it, at home in my garage. Pretty smart, huh?

The only good part of this story was that as soon as the red light or gauge warned me, don't remember which, I was right by some road workers who said a Chevy dealer was about two blocks away. Coasted in on amperage fumes and they had one in stock to get me going again. I had just delivered a load.

Professor, how far do you think todays electronic everything engines could travel on "amperage fumes"? (Great term!) I would guess that the fuel pump and fuel injection rail must draw a good bit of juice.

I was able to go 8 miles on the interstate and about 7 miles on county and city roads. Stopped at maybe 4 traffic lights. I was determined to avoid another wrecker bill. And I did!
