Fun On The Road

We discovered a layover recreation opportunity yesterday that I just have to share. Deadheading from Phoenix to Salt Lake City via U.S. 89, we enjoyed and photographed some of the most spectacular scenery we've seen on the road. Then stopping to use the rest room and buy an ice cream bar, we unexpectedly found ourselves in the middle of the world's best ATV trail site.

We were thrilled to learn of the Paiute ATV trail system - 275 miles long, with over 1000 miles of marked side trails and 1500+ miles of side forest roads and trails - ATV rentals, and a host of hotels and cabin vendors that cater to ATV toruists.

Marysvale, UT is in the center of the trail system and less than 200 miles south of Salt Lake City on U.S. 89. Our new friends Dave and Tish stand ready to rent us everything we need for an ATV ride that will treat us to sights and sounds of Utah that we'd never see from the truck. You can stay every night in hotels with showers if you wish, or camp on the trail. Dave and Tish have a "Mule" ATV available too. It's like a golf cart, only with ATV wheels and power.

Sorry if I'm a little over-enthusiastic about this, but seeing the country is part of why we got into expediting. This delightful discovery is part of the fun!

A Salt Lake City layover is not always good news because freight can be slow there. We can't wait until it happens to us. We'll go out of service and head immediately to Marysvale for a three day mini-vacation on the ATV trails.

Trail information is at http://www.marysvale.org/

Dave and Tish have a web site too: http://www.4x44fun.com/index.htm

And if you think 89 is beautiful coming up from the south, try it from Ogden to Bear Lake and catch 30 there all the way to I-80. It is curvey and follows a river up into the mountains. A bit of a long downgrade commin into Bear Lake but gorgeous.
We have some accounts in Ogden that go east and although a bit more time consuming actually cuts off 81 miles according to PC Miler. It is 348 miles via Ogden to Bear Lake to Laramie compared to 429 if you just punch in Ogden to Laramie.
Give it a try if you have a daytime run thru there

I am glad someone else has seen that area, I have been telling Cynthia It is the most beautiful place I have seen since I started driving and would eat the deadhead anytime to cut back through there!

A couple of weeks ago we were doing the west coast bounce around and took a run up to Bend Oregon w/ deadhead to Portland, this brought us through Detroit Lake Oregon and through 160 miles of the Cascade Mtns..A must see if you have the fortune and time to run that way as the redwoods white snowcap and winding rapids are awesome!

We also found ourselves taking a run from Ontario Ca, to Reno via Ca Rte 395 along the Easteren Sierras, a tedious run but damn the scenery is great.

One of the pluses of doing this line of work is the advantage of being able to see parts of the USA that you may have never had the opportunity to see. We have spent time at the Grand Canyon ,the Utah Canyons such as Bryce and Zion and many trips through Oregon and the northern California Coastline..
One of the best sightseeing trips was to leave the truck at the Medford Oregon Airport, rented a car and drove to Crater Lake Oregon then back down to Brookings Oregon on the coast. We spent 4 days and it was worth every minute.Sometime you can chase that dollar too much and you need to take abreak, kick back, enjoy your spouse or significant other and realize we are only here for a short stretch.

Thanks for the info ATeam, one of the best links I've seen posted. This would appeal to me much more than some museum (no offense to museum lovers!)

Definately one to keep.
