Cass domestic shipping decline follows September drop in international measures

The Cass Freight Index for U.S. domestic shipments took a steep 9.9 percent dive in October from the month, cutting short a two-month rally in the closely watched measure.

The shipments index still gained 2.2 percent over the same month a year ago. But the first sequential decline since July also left the Cass Information Systems index at its lowest level since February.

The setback in domestic demand followed declines in September in various international measures, including ocean import volume, that signaled a meek peak shipping season was winding down earlier than usual.

At 1.081, the shipments index was 14.5 percent behind the reading four years ago, in October 2007.

The Cass index for shipping expenditures also showed seasonal weakness, slipping 4 percent from September to October. The spending index was 16.1 percent above the same month a year ago, in part because energy prices have grown sharply over the past year.

I know this sounds like an uneducated answer, but the only thing that matters to me is my numbers, my bottom line.

Kinda like Siskel and Ebert, the movie critics.When they said a movie sucked, I'd go and see it, and it was the best.Same here.

The funny thing is, talking to an "expert" last night who works for one of these companies advertising here, he asked the same thing I am going to ask;

what is expedite freight, because it isn't what it was two years ago. So when we see these stats without a clear understanding what actually it is or how it crosses over into LTL freight, it is rather meaningless.

OVM, do you drive anymore?

Greg, I'm taking a wild guess that he doesn't. He took his sig line to heart, and now he's sitting on top of his millions while the rest of us poor schmucks continue to drive.

Now I have to figure out how to drive less and make more-- it's a great living if you can do it.

I'm starting to think that he is living off the money he makes marketing pickle to the oil people up there in SD/ND area and not driving at all.
