I had one of the best days of my life yesterday!!!! I took my 6 year old granddaughter fishing for the very first time!!!
I took her back into a catfish hole that I used to fish a lot 30 years ago but had not been to since they closed the fence and stopped land access. I knew how to go in by boat but had not.
I am happy to say that it is as good as it was back then. Once again, I was given the privilege to see the look of sheer excitement when a kid hooked their first fish. She was almost sqealing "Help me granpa, Help ME!!" Followed by,"This is fun, granpa, HELP ME!!!!" All the while grinning from ear to ear, and bitting her lower lip as she fought the "monster catfish". It was a nice 2lb cat. She was using a light rod with 6lb line so the fight was long and hard, a fitting battle for a 6 year old.
It was fun to see her change right there and then. When we first got there she was afraid to touch a nightcrawler and within the first hour she became the "worm kid" passing out crawlers to all in the boat who needed one!!! She helped release the fish too!! It was difficult to control her, she kept wanting to grab it near the barbs in her excitement.
I was worried about her getting bored but there was enough action (and worms) to keep her interest for almost 4 hours! She out fished everyone who was there catching 4 catfish, the biggest almost 5lbs.
Life is as it should be when on the lake with a child, introducing them to the joys of the outdoors.
