Truth be told, I think this started a very long time ago. Checked under the cover in 2017 maybe?
This is what it looked like after a good soaking with oven cleaner
Better, right?
So, first I cleaned as much crud as possible with a pick, blowing it out with a can of compressed air as I went (air compressor in storage unit, too lazy to get). Working on a hot engine I cracked the hold down bolt carefully loose and took it down the street.
Didn't get 5 minutes, smoke started coming thru the vents until it looked like a Cheech and Chong film and it was chugging so much I thought it wouldn't make it back
Removed injector, came out with a visegrip and twisting (bought chinese tool #1, a non damaging thing that looks like a huge c clamp, but didn't need)
Next was the hard part, cleaning. Spent about 3 hours picking the carbon to get to the hold down bolt, now I was faced with this
Took about an hour with carburetor cleaner to finish off what I could now get to
Notice the paper towel (hopefully) keeping the chunks out of the bore
I pulled out the tap and die set, and alternated carburetor cleaner, brake cleaner, and canned air until the hold down bolt hole threads were spotless.
Took an entire can of brake clean and carb clean for one freaking cylinder.
So chinese tool #2 - extracts the old seal from the bore if it happens to stick (mine did)
On to chinese tool # 3, to ensure a clean seat for the injector. I also wrapped a carb cleaner soaked paper towel multiple times to burnish the surface for the new injector seal
Leaving me with the final product
Cleaned the injector too
Assembly was a breeze. New seal, new bolt, copper antisieze on the injector and voila
Had an extended 82 mph run today, no leaks. Biggest difference, it's too quiet!
I'm probably one of the last ones to run something this old for expedite so I just documented my fun.
