fed ex CC newbie nightmare....please help

I am new with Fed Ex CC....I have been on the road since December as the company owner. I hired 2 drivers and I have not been making good money on this straight truck. I averaged about $300-$500 profit at the end of each week. I guess its slow this season (jan-Marcmyh). I gave them 20% of TOTAL LOAD (including fuel surcharge) AND quarterly bonuses AND hotel rooms once a month while away from home. I felt that I shouldn't be paying them for the fuel when it was coming out of pocket. So they were very angry about this, one driver went to the bus stop the other drove my truck home and will not answer is phone AND ran up my company credit card eating and deadheading home.

HELP

-what should I do to retrieve my vehicle?

-How should or could I improve how I run my company?

-Any suggestions on running a fleet would be nice also...

I appreciate all the help....I am also hiring again for Team Drivers...I just want to make sure I do a better job this time.

Are you solo? What kind of truck? Dry box or reefer? This Jan and Feb so far have been extremely busy for our team, reefer truck. Send me a PM if you like. I will try to help you out. Just give me some time to answer, we are running hard and I don't always have time to check in here. It may be a day or so till I get back.

It is normally a 60/40 split whomever takes the 60% also gets the fuel surcharge and pays for fuel.

The question that has to be asked is

Before venturing into being a fleet owner, did you actually drive a truck?

greg, id bet not in this "situation...but id bet yes HE has..if you think real hard..LOL......To the original poster, what does your contract stay about "returning the truck" to the owner upon terminating the contact??? Oh and just for some basic info, what were your projections in you business plan for the 1st quarter of the yr per truck???

I think you need to explain that pay plan with a little more detail.

I have read the OP's post 3 or 4 times.. and I still am not sure.. But I think when they say out of pocket on fuel. The OP is paying the fuel.

Either way, I would not get near their truck for a 20% cut. Unless that one hotel room was at the Ritz with all expenses paid (including in room movies and room service)

Then maybe. for a month or two.

As a FECC owner driver, I can tell you there is no way I would do this job for 20%. I get 100% now and its tough to stay in a straight truck.

500 bucks profit a week is about right, if you have a truck payment. Being a fleet owner is like being a section 8 landlord, except your "houses" move around and need more maintenance.

If ROI is your concern, sell the truck and buy a "real" business, there is no such thing as a free lunch.

Suppose you have John Doe and Jim Smith, unrelated and autonomous individuals teaming together. They are in a truck getting on a 60/40 split getting the 40%. Now, there could be various arrangements, but presuming they split equally that's 20% overall. I'm not speaking for or against it, just pointing out that doing this for 20% isn't all that uncommon when operating as a driving member of a team.

as long as fuel is not coming out of that 40 your likely correct and that is acceptable.

thank you for answering my questions to you all. I apologize for the confusion. YES, my drivers both received 20% and I paid for the fuel with my 60%. I think I treated them well, I just asked that they work hard and be honest. But I retrieved my truck and will be back on the road shortly. The driver who went to the bus stop called me 3xs this week to ask to get back on board...so I must be doing something right, right?

I deleted my original post as I misunderstood the OP.
Paying the drivers 40% and the owner paying for fuel is a fair deal.

If the truck grosses 150k a year, which is higher than "Average", Then each Teamate will make 30k a year. Roughly 13 bucks a hour, I don't think that is enough money for th hardships involved in this business.

A Starbucks Barrista makes that and they get to go home every nite. I think this business is only good for people who do it because "They Want Too".

Anyway, unless I didn't have an alternative, I wouldn't do this as an employee for 30k year.

As an o/o it gets to be worth it, because of the personal freedom. Anyway its my 2 cents after 5 almost 6 years.
