Favorite Places to Eat

Hi, all--

I'm working on a piece for EO about road food and thought I'd ask a quick question: What are your favorite places to eat on the road? This could be one specific place or a chain that you go to in many different areas. No matter the situation or setup, I want to know what you think the best places to eat are.

As usual, the chances are pretty good I'll quote you, and you'll get credit and there will be a link back to this thread. Thanks so much for your help; your expertise has been really important to me as I get comfortable with writing about Expediting.

Cheers!

Halo Burger in Flint Michigan (4 or 5 places along I-75, I-475 or us-23) is my favorite.

Other favorites are White Castle or Kristal's (Not too much difference). In & Out burger out west. Also Phatburger in Vegas area.

Seeing a pattern?

One more... Sparky's Diner in my Home Town of Traverse City, Michigan

Other than an occasional Subway I eat in the truck. Much much cheaper and healthier this way.

Golden Corral
For price and healthy food and choices.

Hometown Buffet & their other restaurants
Not as good as GC, but good.

Chinese Buffets
After checking the environment for cleanliness

When they are not available, frozen bagged food from the grocery store, nuke it, and frozen chicken and pasta, with Alfredo from a jar is almost a gourmet meal. Almost.

Backyard BBQ, Kokomo, IN, next to the Walmart.

Petro, Racine/Sturtevant, WI. On Friday nights, they used to (hopefully still do) have king crab legs on the buffet. Not the little snow crab legs, but the big kings. They explode out of the shell all over you. I've made a spectacle of myself there more than once.

Molly Murphy's House of Fine Repute, Tulsa, OK. Like in LA, all the waiters and waitresses seem to be aspiring actors/actresses, dressed in costume and acting in character the whole time. Made the mistake of wearing a Hawaiian shirt; my Mae West waitress called me Don Ho all night. At the end, she took me aside and said, "Don, all night, as I've looked at you, there's something I've wanted to get off my chest...YOUR EYES."

Elephant Run, Tulsa, OK: All you can eat seafood buffet. Went there after graduating basic training. Gained back a few ell-bee-esses I'd lost in basic training, and they made no profit that night.

Bombay Bicycle Club, Omaha, NE: Went there with a couple other larger-than-average mammals. One nacho supreme appetizer licked us all.

Mexican restaurant I can't remember the name of, South Charleston, WV, attached to the Days Inn or Super 8. Fantastic.

Bob's Clam Hut in Kittery, ME. I really like whole fried clams, and there are a few other clam shacks scattered over New England that I'm fond of, but Bob's is one of the best.

Texas Land & Cattle, pretty darn good steak houses with several locations in Texas.

Any Famous Dave's is awesome and reasonable.

Skyline Chili - very odd chili on spaghetti noodles and/or hot dogs - with cheddar on top.

Coney Dogs - usually in Ft. Wayne. Just like the hot dogs you would have at the family picnic before you dropped it in the sand.

Whole Hog Cafe.....numerous locations in Arkansas, and a few in other states.

Best barbecue ever, but I could go there just for the potato salad.
