Hard to make a assessment as the age of the child is not mentioned. They show a picture, but my guess is that likely does not represent the actual child.

After the father completes a parenting course, because that's actually a thing, as soon as his probation is up the no contest plea will be expunged, assuming he doesn't engage in any more old school discipline.

OMG! A WHOLE MILE? How did the poor kid live through that? In Hawaii too? That BRUTAL weather! What a crock. A mile is NOTHING for a kid, or at least it should NOT be. Then we wonder why there are SO many obese kids.

I walked about 1/2 mile, each way till grade two, when I started walking a mile each way. No regard to weather. It is Michigan. It gets cold, get used to it. Wimps

And uphill both ways I bet !

Hills? In South East Michigan? We did often ice skate to school in winter. Had lots of ice storms back then and school was not cancelled every time there was a hint of bad weather. Our cut off was 10" of snow, which was rare and I don't recall there ever being 10" of ice or rain. There were many years when we never missed school due to weather. I remember once, it was about 5 below zero and the boiler broke, they did close for that. It was that cold the day before and we walked. The one day we were off, we played ice hockey, outside, all day.
