I put the truck into the shop at the Freightliner in Orlando on thursday. I talked with them today. They said the the "expansion valves" need replaced, as does the dryer filter. They are flushing the system as well. Price tag is under $700. They assure me that this will fix the problems I am having. Layoutshooter

That's not too bad but did you ask them if it does not fix the problem, will they do the rest of the work for free? :p

Faulty expansion valves should have shown up when the earlier shops checked the pressures. The valve, sometimes called the block valve (block shaped) is where the liquid freon turns into gas (and makes cold happen!). If this valve fails it can fail open which would give you poor system performance and the high and low side pressures would be closer together than they should be OR if it fails shut, it would give you very high, high side pressures which...would cause the fan to run more often than it should. This is all diagnosed by hooking up guages and reading the pressures (which a previous shop said they did and all was supposed to be fine).

As for the flush, why? did they find contaminates? Replacing the drier is really cheap insurance and any A/C shop worth it's salt will replace it every time the system is exposed to the ambient air. The valve is a common failure on FTL and any other OEM who uses that type of system. Good news is it's cheap and easy to replace.

Yea, I bet they do the work for free if it does not fix it. That has only EVER happened once in my entire life and it was with this truck. The Detroit Diesel in Caton looked at this problem and did not charge me for the work since they could not fix it. There were contaminates, the reason for the flush. I sure hope this is the answer. They seemed very sure of themselves on this. I have had good recogmondations on this shop from other dirvers, we shall see. I did notice that the Orlando FD had thier work done there. Every fire department I was involed with was very pickey on where they took thier trucks for service. I hope that Orlando is the same. That would make me feel better about the work there. I picked up my truck today and of course it did not work. The air was cold, the fan cycled just fine but I was getting a check engine light. That was not part of my original problem. I took it right back in and they put the reader on it. It came up showing the low pressure sensor not reading. It was disconected. The light went out. I drove it aroung the block and the light came back on. I took it back, no codes and the light went out. I had them hook up the reader and we went for a ride. Did not make it out of the parking lot and the light came on. This time the code said that the EGR valve sensor was not working. The mechcanic lifted the hood, played with the fitting and shut the hood. We went for about a 4 mile drive. No problems. Just loose. All seems fine now. Let's hope it holds. We shall see, we pick up a load in the morning, nice long run that will give it a good test. Layoutshooter
