BBC News - FAA to close 149 air traffic towers as budget cuts bite

The US aviation authority plans to close 149 air traffic control towers in response to steep budget cuts that took effect this month.

Towers will close at small airports but the facilities will remain open, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

Pilots will have to co-ordinate takeoff and landing by themselves after 7 April using a shared radio channel.

On 1 March, $85bn (£56bn) was cut from this year's budget after Congress failed to reach a budget deal.

"We heard from communities across the country about the importance of their towers and these were very tough decisions," Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said in a statement.

But he said the closures were unavoidable because of the spending cuts known in Washington as the sequester.

FAA officials said they would work to maintain safety levels at the affected airports.
"We will work with the airports and the operators to ensure the procedures are in place to maintain the high level of safety at non-towered airports," Administrator Michael Huerta said.

The airports marked for closure are spread across the country. Some are smaller airports in densely populated areas, a list released by the FAA shows.

Overall, the agency must find $637m in savings through the end of the fiscal year, 30 September.

Towers were only recommended for closure if it posed no threat to national security and if the agency forecast little economic impact beyond the affected local community, the FAA said.

As a pilot I can tell you it's the hype. 90% of those on the list are wasting tax dollars anyway. It's to much to explain here but it's not a big deal.

Lets hope some good comes from all this C-Quest-er business. Maybe they will find out that many government offices are duplication on top of duplication. Many jobs in government are just designed for good old boys relatives , like where do we put junior, he cant do anything anyway ....so they make up a department, we know that's true. Lets lay off every other Senator and Congressman to start and if they have been there for over 10 years, they should be fired. Maybe the snopes folks could snope around and find out how many relatives are setting in a useless office and list the names nationwide for starters, just saying....
