Express Center Q

We have express ctr's in DesPlaines and Elk Grove IL. They are literally right next to eachother on the Chicago city map.

Can anyone tell me why, and which one is better for loads? I layed over in Gary IN, thinking I'd have a shot at Chicago freight, lost out on everything they have sent me today and I'm at the top of the Gary list.

Can a wise FX elder 'splain the tips for Chicago to me?

***never mind the DES part, even tho its on the April 09 list of exp centers, it isn't in the VRU.

The only express center left in Chicago area is ELK, not including Gary, the rest of them finally got eliminated about a year or two ago. It was a real pain in the a-- trying to get checked into the express that was the best or sent to as your layover option. I don't know of any reason to check into Gary, unless you just don't want to get into Chicago traffic just trying to get checked in.

Thanks for the replies (even yours DD:)). I was sent here as a layover option, never had to layover in the Chicago area so i goofed up and did not check for another exp ctr counts. Had I called in and seen the #'s for ELK, I mighta left town.

FX rookie mistake.......

To my knowledge,Des Plains was never an express ctr.

Before they did away with all of the Chicago express centers (there were 4)and left only Elk Grove Village, there was also Lincolnwood,Bedford Park, and South Holland.

Someone told me a while ago (orientation?) that a bunch were gone, but DES is still in the "helper"/on the web.

This is one mistake I won't repeat DD. Too bad, the showers at this J (xt 15) are really clean!

A short time after I started with FedEx I ended up in the Chicago area and since there was nobody on South Holland board I checked in there. They used to have about 2 loads a day from South Holland. Well, at the end of the day there were 2 loads dispatched from South Holland, none were offered to me, and I was the only one in South Holland. I called to ask about it and they explained it to me that the load goes to the truck with the most dwell time if they can make the pickup, no matter where they are checked in. So, 2 trucks from Elk Grove Village got the loads in South Holland. I guess the same with Gary now. If you want to layover in Gary, you have to consider how many are in Elk Grove Village, knowing that some of them might be able to pick up in Gary before you. But that goes both ways. If you layover in Gary long enough, you might get loads from Chicago, if you can make it in time, before those with lower dwell time in Elk Grove Village. Hope it made some sense.

I have noticed lately we seem to be getting a lot more layover options that include Gary as the number one choice.

Your dwell time will come into play so before you move consider that.

Try this one for size:

While sitting just north of Dayton, OH, last Friday night (after a chat with layoutshooter), we got offered (and accepted) a run picking up just outside of Madison, WI. 453 miles to pickup, and the run was 760-something after that. No one in ANY of the aforementioned express centers? I would think Gary, Elk, even the ones in WI would have some......apparently not so.

I don't have that problem. I tore purgatory out of my atlas. :D

It is amazing when you can make the pickup in time how far away the load opps will reach out to.
There could have been others closer but you had more dwell time and you would get the load or if you refused you would get dinged with the refusal.
We do not even consider dead head anymore just how much does the load pay and can we make a profit. If the company is going to offer us a load with 400 miles dead head for a 200 mile run and we can make money on it then we take it.

As do we. We take what ever load pays well and meets our needs.

I was laying over south of ELK one time and they offered me a load to Ontario near Kitchner picking up near Gary- go figure, but like previously mentioned ELK had more loads, most of them aren't long loads but numberwise its better there.

With slow freight, almost all loads are picking up "tomorrow". This makes it possible to get to the load from many Express Centers. Hence, dwell time is the biggest factor at this time. We send our "Proof Of Delivery", accepting the Express Center they have suggested, then we check in. All before we have left the delivery location. This has been working for us even if we deliver in TimbukThree.
